Soldier Surprises Bolingbrook Student with Flag Flown in Kuwait

Sgt. Brian Barrett recently surprised a 9-year-old Bolingbrook student and her class at Jamie McGee Elementary School.

When Sgt. Brian Barrett left for his third tour of duty with the National Guard, he received a special gift from a Jamie McGee student he had never met.

Lauren Hrdlicka, now nine years old, drew a picture of an American flag and wrote a note wishing Barrett a safe return.

Lauren's drawing meant so much to Barrett, friends say, that he took photos with it during his 10 months in Kuwait. After returning home to Bolingbrook, he surprised Lauren and her third grade class Thursday.

Barrett showed the third-graders where he served on the map, answered their questions and took a class picture.

He also gave Lauren an American flag flown in Kuwait. She attended Barrett's homecoming Saturday, where she proudly displayed her new flag.
