Departing Athletic Director Anderson Proud of Activity Growth at BHS

Bolingbrook High School has won seven state championships under Anderson's supervision as athletic director.

But, as Anderson prepares to leave his position as assistant principal of athletics and activities at BHS in two months to become director of athletics and activities at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, the state championships aren’t what he remembers most.

“Yes, the state championships have been a lot of fun,” he said. “But it’s been great to see the growth in the programs that don’t get the notoriety that basketball or football does.”

Anderson, who came to BHS after serving as director of athletics at Evanston Township High School and assistant principal for athletics and activities at Urbana High School, credits his predecessor at BHS, Larry Bernard, with getting the ball rolling in the right direction.

“We just tried to continue it,” Anderson said.

He points to tremendous growth in the highly successful BHS Junior ROTC and speech programs as high points along with expanded boys and girls bowling, girls golf, and badminton programs that are now able to compete with the best programs around the state.

“And it’s been great watching the growth in our facilities,” said Anderson, who presided over the installation of an all-turf football field and a new weight room. “If it was good for kids, we got it.”

He is confident Robert Rose will do an excellent job as his replacement.

“Rob’s a Bolingbrook graduate and he understands the job,” Anderson said. “He’ll work hard.

Anderson terms the move to H-F “a good move for me and my family at this point in my career.” The Kankakee resident figures this will likely be his final stop before he starts thinking about retirement.

His final day with  will be June 15.
