The military continues to play an important role in protecting the freedoms United States citizens enjoy.

So says Vietnam veteran Dave Appel who was one of several veterans who spoke to Irene King Elementary School students this week about the importance of Veterans Day.

“People in other countries don’t have the freedoms you have,” the retired Valley View School District 365U Technology Department member told a 3rd grade class Wednesday. “Our military helps preserve freedom and peace.”

Appel detailed a bit of history for the students, pointing out Veterans Day was once called Armistice Day in honor of the agreement made on the 11th day at the 11th hour in November 1918 bringing peace to the western front during  World War I. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.

“On Veterans Day, we celebrate and honor all of the people who decided to serve their country,” the Fleet Marine Reservist said. “And a veteran doesn’t necessarily have to serve in a war.”
