The former Student Council President of the Secondary Transition Experience Program (STEP) in Valley View School District 365U Friday urged current students to take advantage of the program’s offerings.

“What you do in this school year will impact you for the rest of your life,” Ira Hammond told students in the 18-to-21-year-old transition program during an opening-week assembly. “What they teach you here will have an impact on you no matter where you go.”

Hammond, who graduated from the program in June, told the class he has started work on a divinity degree with hopes of becoming a minister.

New STEP Principal Kristin Soprych emphasized responsibility and safety to the students who will spend the next eight-plus months learning real-world skills and, in many cases, working in various jobs in local businesses.
