Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.

Martinez Middle School’s Junior National Honor Society members took time out of their busy lives to put together care packages and write notes to members of the Illinois National Guard’s UH-60 Blackhawk Assault Helicopter Company which is currently deployed in Kuwait.

Among the Company’s 43 members in Kuwait is the commander of the unit, Captain Peter Kephart, the husband of Martinez 6th grade math teacher Kim Kephart.

Students packed up such things as Pop Tarts, Skittles, granola bars, fruit snacks, gum, cookies and toilet paper to send to the troops.

“When you’re in the middle of the desert, you wouldn’t believe how appreciative they will be when they receive this care package,” Kim Kephart told the students. “This small token of our appreciation lets them know we are thinking about them.”
