NHS Volunteers Help Kids Go to Camp

by Erin Gallagher

Kids who wouldn't ordinarily get to attend a summer camp are doing just that, thanks in part to Bolingbrook High School National Honor Society.

DuPage Township hosts a summer camp, called Summer Bridge, for kids who wouldn't normally be able to afford it. About 275 students ages 4 to 15 attend every day, said Kristina Parro, the township's youth coordinator.

"There are about 70 volunteers," Parro said. "I'd say really from all over the community, but mostly from Bolingbrook High School (National Honor Society).

Summer Bridge offers activities and field trips free of charge.

"Field trips occur once a week to places like Pelican Harbor Water Park, AMF Bowling Lanes, Hidden Oaks Nature Center, Wilderness Falls Mini Golf, and many more," Parro wrote in an email.

The program is currently filled, but spaces may be opening up next week, Parro said.
