Parents and students alike spoke up during a three-hour board of education meeting Monday at Lukancic Middle School in Romeoville.

Many were concerned about safety at Bolingbrook High School following the resignation of Principal Michael White. On Jan. 30, the campus was briefly locked down when a student brought a BB gun to school.

Believing it to be a real weapon, the freshman reportedly pointed it at a teacher before running out of the classroom.

According to the Chicago Tribune, White found the student pointing the gun at his own neck, and convinced him to put it down.

During the Feb.10 meeting, a 15-year-old BHS student talked about her terror during the BB gun incident, saying she didn't want to be seen as a kid from "Ghettobrook High School," according to the Tribune.

Supt. James Mitchem said VVSD is exploring areas in need of "further supports," according to the Tribune, and the administration is looking to "re-instill confidence" in school safety.

Cirrock February 12, 2014 at 05:58 pm BHS is only the tip of the iceberg. Students are no longer being held accountable. Teacher assaults are not even resulting in suspension of the student, and if a parent complains, the principal backs down. At Brooks students roam the halls and once during a lockdown practice last month, no administrator was in the building.

Cirrock, the kids are being held responsible at BHS. However, the admin down in Romeoville like to override disciine decisions. We are worried about what will happen next year when Mr. White is gone. I can't speak for things at Brooks but I hear its a free-for-all over there. VVSD is doomed if we don't get the mindsets of parents, kids and upper eschelon admin changed. You don't get an education handed to you; you EARN it.

There IS hope for Bolingbrook High School--we learned that with Mr. White!
Cirrock February 13, 2014 at 07:12 AM
Tristan: You're absolutely right about earn it. Unfortunately, there are parents who feel that affirmative action means otherwise and willing to take the admin to court. If the union wasn't so worthless I'd take them to court myself, but I've come to the conclusion I'm out numbered. I wish White would come to Brooks, that school needs something to get those kids in line. I feel for those teachers who have been slammed for implementing discipline.

Mr. White is no longer at Bolingbrook High School. His office is empty and his email has been shut down.

Sounds like something they mr gougis, quigley, and mitchem would do. The emperor has no clothes. their fiefdom is falling apart.

That is a very sad day if this is true .. We never had Mr. White but I am so impressed at how he has affected so many at the school and the changes that took place.

It is a sad day indeed.

What Bolingbrook High needs is a School Disciplinarian in addition to a new Principal. We need a no-nonsense person that reports directly to the Principal roaming the halls all day long, cracking down on the troublemakers and leave the Principal to primarily focus on the schools success. Imagine what Mr. White could have accomplished under those circumstances. Not only would you have seen a difference in the schools environment, you would seen a bigger jump in academic achievements as well.

any news?
Adam Patton February 13, 2014 at 07:12 PM
This news of Mr. White is just devastating. I can not comprehend why the district wants him out so badly. There is something behind the curtain that we have not seen yet. The district could have at least warned us that he had only a few days left. I do not even think he knew this was going to happen this morning. Yesterday, I talked with him about a project him and I were working on with improving the school by utilizing digital signage throughout the school. At the conclusion of our conversation, we planned to meet again next week Tuesday. This directly tells me that he did not know this was coming at all. The district has thrown out Mr. White like a piece of trash. I suppose the districts trash is our treasure. A treasure that inspired us and lead us in the right direction when nobody else could.

Make sure you don't just include the H.S. as the middle schools (Brooks in particular) have students roaming the halls, gambling in the bathrooms, suspensions have all but been eliminated and violence is growing. Today a girl barricaded herself in the bathroom declaring she was going to harm herself. Who hears about these things? No one, everyone keeps them quiet.
Pete Simon February 14, 2014 at 09:40 AM
Adam Patton: I don't think he knew what was coming. I spoke to him at the Board January 27. A resident asked what was next for him. Mr. White said he was going to do his job and finish his contract, nothing has changed. AGAIN, THANK MR. WHITE FOR OPENING OUR EYES: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5WeRYeRFdI&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3Dz5WeRYeRFdI&app=desktop

Does anyone remember the last Board meeting when the members praised the public for showing up or when they told the BHS student how courageous she was (as she was tearing them a new one I might add at the age of 15). Or when Gougis praised Mitchem (I don't think anyone applauded). They would skirt around answers and try to lull us asleep. That is the second oldest trick in the Public relations book. Quote from Carol Stigger on a comment she made in another BHS article. "Next, look for eloquent words with no substance and distractions from the main issue." Does that sound familiar? Hope you don't Mind Carol

So here is the latest from the grapevine…. Mr. Mitchem is going back to BHS temporarily, Mr. Krause is going to “mentor” the AP that they plan to move from RHS to BHS as intermediate principal. The search for a new principal will be internal. Just another way of saying that they will move his pal Mr. Kinder to BHS next year? Perhaps Dr. Wood from Brooks? How long until tardies and fights increase, and scores go down without the homework sweeps? Back to graphs on the walls showing who is fighting, but apparently not doing anything about that behavior? This means back to poor teacher moral which directly affects student performance. Beefed up security because kids will be wandering the halls once again? Will BHS turn into RHS? No discipline, no consequences for poor behavior? A principal that hides in the office when there is a fight? Students who aren’t afraid of being sent to the principal’s office? Heard the issues were that a certain principal challenged the district with their own data. His test scores went up, the other guys didn’t. Yet, the other guy got a big raise while our guy didn’t. Allegedly went to battle over the homework sweeps. Mr White believes homework is important to do even if it can’t be worth more than 10% of your grade. Mr Mitchem apparently doesn’t believe in homework. If that is the case why do any of the teachers give homework? How did the homework sweeps increase the scores in the school? Simple, you no longer had the students with involved parents doing the homework regardless of the percentage of the grade, you had ALL THE STUDENTS doing homework. Basically you had Mr White being the principal and parent to a lot of the low achieving students. Now the useless parents don’t have to worry about being inconvenienced by a principal that raised expectations for the students. Get ready for chaos to return to BHS.

Here's a good quote from this article: http://romeoville.patch.com/groups/opinion/p/letter-to-the-editor-union-endorses-candidates The Valley View Council chose to participate in the endorsement process this year because more than ever, it is absolutely essential at the point in time to have school board members who are: objective, willing to rationally discuss and debate public education issues, aware of community input and interests, cognizant of the “we are all in this together” philosophy, and hopefully determined to reach a consensus on difficult issues.”

How about all of you shut up. I am a senior at Bolingbrook High school. My School is perfectly safe. Don't you dare think just because you see something about my school, that you know what's going on with us. My school is perfectly safe, Just because one idiot did something wrong, it doesn't mean we're all horrible. So what! Yes, Mr. White is gone but that doesn't mean we have no home training with out him. so fuck off. All of you are just pissing me off and sticking your noses where they don't need to be. Worry about your own lives and get them together.
Tristan March 01, 2014 at 09:46 PM
Nene, as tax payers, parents and educators we have every right to voice our legitimate concerns and seeing as this is America, we do have a right to state our opinion. As a high school student, you do not know what you do not know. Your brain is still developing and won't be finished until you're 25. The part of the brain that develops last is the part that processes consequences and thinking in the long term. While you may feel safe at BHS (and I am glad that you do) many of us see dangers and potential problems that you may not. There is no need for foul language. It weakens your argument and people won't take you seriously. Please share your opinion but see if you can do it without cursing.
