youngsters kicked off College Homecoming Week Monday with an outdoor all-school pep rally featuring mini-floats made by families over the weekend and a Tibbott Staff Cheer Team.

“This week is all about motivating children and getting them to think about college as a possibility for their future,” said Tibbott Principal Ana Wilson.  “We’re just opening their minds, opening their hearts and helping open doors for them.”

On Wednesday one lucky student will win the opportunity to eat lunch in the college dorm room Tibbott has created, complete with a lofted bunk bed, desk and lounging chairs. Every student will have a chance to tour the room this week.

“Many of our children have never been on a college campus,” Wilson said.  “It’s not feasible to bring all 683 to a college, so we’re bringing college to them so they have an idea of what it’s like to live on campus.”

Wednesday night the community is invited to a presentation by State of Illinois officials on “Saving for College.” And on Friday from 9:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. students will attend an actual college fair with representatives of several colleges on hand. Parents are invited as well.

“We’re hoping this motivates them to set higher expectations for the future,” Wilson said. “We know they can do it. It’s just a matter of showing them  what they can accomplish.”
