Valley View's 2012 Summer Learning Experience Cost $148,000

The Valley View School District 365U school board recently approved increasing student fees and cutting transportation to reduce costs for the 2013 Summer Learning Experience program.

Valley View School District 365U saw a net loss of $147,887.88 for its 2012 Summer Learning Experience program, which offered K-5 students hands-on instruction over the summer.

School board member Rich Gougis asked the district to change the words "net loss" in the district's report to "investment." The report now reads, "...the overage investment of the SLE 2012 Program was $147,887.88."

Take a look at the full Summer Learning Experience budget.

Venus Smith, assistant superintendent for education K-5, proposed cutting transportation and increasing student fees to cut the loss for the 2013 program. Those two measures will recoup $82,549.68.

The student fee will increase from $100/student/week to $110/student/week, with $125/student/week for out-of-district students.

Few students utilized Valley View transportation for the program, resulting in a loss of more than $30,000 in transportation alone. There were only four to six students per AM or PM bus route for the program, Smith said.

New school sites

Summer Learning Experience was offered at four Valley View schools last year: Beverly Skoff, Kenneth Hermansen, Pioneer and Jamie McGee. For the 2013 program, the Skoff site will move to R.C. Hill.

R.C. Hill houses the Autism, Cross Cat, Low Incidence and bilingual education programs during the regular school year, so resources to serve those groups will be more readily accessible for SLE students.

The district will also add Ward as an SLE site to better serve those living on the east side of Bolingbrook. This addition will not occur if the school does not enroll enough students for the program. The minimum number is 156.

2013 Summer Learning Experience

The 2013 SLE will be held in two, four-week sessions from June 10 to July 3 and from July 8 to August 2. Parents who need to drop off their children before the SLE day begins or who can’t pick up their children right away at the end of the SLE day, will be able to sign up for before-and-after-school care programs for an additional fee.

All participants will receive a free breakfast before their day begins, and a free lunch as well.

Registration forms and more information are available through the Summer Learning Experience website at http://summerfun.vvsd.org, by visiting any VVSD elementary school, or by stopping in at the VVSD Administration Center, 755 Dalhart Drive, Romeoville.

If the school district considers this an "investment" as Mr Gougis said, why are the taxpayers of VVSD asked to cover the costs for the "investment" for children that do not live in the district? Shouldn't those costs be covered by the school district where they live?

Tom, it is more than likely because VVSD has to pay Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital 4 million in the next 3 years. Oh wait, us taxpayers have to pay back ABH for VVSD!!!!!

If a "Net Loss" is an investment I certainly wouldn't want Mr Gougis on my management team. What school did he get his MBA from?
Easy to "invest" other people's money when there isn't a return on Investment. Where is the proof that this program works? "Data Driven" is their key phrase, so where is the data?

So how much is this years "investment" going to cost the district? Skuttlebutt is that enrollment is low, and they actually thought about cancelling it.
Haven't heard much about the upcoming summer sessions.

The latest buzz word for socialists is "Investment". Gougis is showing his true colors again. How is this an investment? VVSD needs to operate these programs so that they break even.

I can't imagine what a customer could do that would cause a cashier to yell at them. Can you expandRead More a little on the situation? I shop there often but generally use the self-scan. There is one cashier that works that area that can be quite rude. It took me a minute to get my ID out and she went off on me. Sorry I wasn't as prepared as I should be but it isn't often that a 45+ woman is asked for ID.
