Valley View Schools Will Be Closed Monday Because of 50-Below Wind Chill

"I cannot in good conscience put even one child at risk," says Valley View School District Superintendent James Mitchem.

No school on Monday. And the verdict is still out on Tuesday.

That's the word from officials in the Valley View School District, which serves families and students in Bolingbrook and Romeoville.

The district announced on its website Sunday that all schools in Valley View School District 365U will be closed on Monday, Jan. 6, because of a forecast that calls for wind chills that are expected to reach 50 below zero.

"The National Weather Service has indicated that any outside activity will be dangerous," Valley View School District Superintendent James Mitchem said in a post on the district website. "With roughly 11,000 children waiting for buses in this district and thousands of others walking to school every day, I cannot in good conscience put even one child at risk when the missed day can easily be made up at the end of the school year."

Valley View School District officials notified parents and staff members of the decision via its ParentLink email/telephone service. They also were planning to send out a reminder on Sunday night.

And, according to the district website, no decision has been made about a possible Tuesday, Jan. 7, closing. That decision will be made sometime Monday, Jan. 6.
