Valley View Students Prepare to Honor Patriot Day, Sept. 11

The complete chain will be presented to the Village of Bolingbrook.

Students at  will mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a Chain of Hope and a special bulletin board of photo memories.

Social studies students created the chains by writing messages to particular emergency rescue workers or military personnel who have had an effect on their lives or to police, fire and military workers in general.

Sixth graders wrote on red chain strips, 7th graders filled out white strips and 8th graders worked on blue strips.

The complete chain is on display in the hallway along with the bulletin board. Following Patriot Day, the chain will be presented to the .

“These kids were three or four years old when the attacks occurred so this will help them make a connection to what happened,” said Humphrey social studies teacher Jana Reeves.

Meanwhile, the staff and students at are busy creating “A Decade of Remembering” display for the school.

The display will include a skyline of New York City with 2011 in the center. The two number ones will be shaped like the Twin Towers brought down by terrorists 10 years ago.

Also in the display will be clouds created by various Wood View classrooms. The clouds will include various creations by students including simple signatures, thumbprints, personal statements and much more.

The entire display is expected to be finished by Sept. 9.

President Barack Obama in 2009 deemed Sept. 11 Patriot's Day. According to the proclamation, all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States are to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day in honor of the individuals who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11.
