Valley View Students Win ACT-SO Medals; Two Qualify for Nationals

Students from Romeoville, Bolingbrook earned honors; two BHS students will head to Las Vegas to compete in July.

Valley View School District 365U students turned in outstanding performances at the DuPage County ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics) local competition March 15.

Two Bolingbrook High School students, Jordan Henderson and Malcolm Smith, earned gold medals thus qualifying for ACT-SO nationals in Las Vegas in July.

  • Henderson won gold in the Dramatics category and also won a silver in Filmmaking
    Smith won gold in the Music Vocal Classical category
    Bolingbrook High School’s Davonte Sanders won a silver medal in Oratory and an honorable mention in Poetry
  • Romeoville High School’s Akachukwu Ajiere won a bronze medal in Engineering.
  • Also competing were Christian Walker of Romeoville High School and Bolingbrook High School’s Dakota Burnett, Marcus Smith and Justin Payton.

Students from 28 different high schools took part in the competition at College of DuPage.

ACT-SO, the NAACP’s national youth initiative, is a year-long enrichment program designed to encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African American high school students.
