One-hundred forty teams and more than 1,400 players participated. And the annual Bolingbrook Soccer Club Labor Day festival pumped an estimated $500,000 into the local economy, according to tournament director Scott Mueller.

The tournament—staged for the 12th year in a row—was put on by club volunteers and played out at the Bolingbrook Park District's Lily Cache soccer campus.

Mueller and others cited some of the highlights:

  • Bolingbrook Deputy Mayor Leroy Brown dropped the first ball to kick off the event.
  • Chicago Fire and Red Star players signed autographs and chatted with fans.
  • Tent sponsor Home Depot hosted a Kids Club event and tent sponsor Sports Authority provided coupons for all participants.
  • Bolingbrook Soccer Club supported two important causes during the tournament—Soccer equipment donations for OneGoal (justonegoal.org), which helps educate children in Liberia, Africa, through participation in soccer; and Information dissemination on the Bolingbrook High School "Stand Up/Speak Out Against Bullying" 5K run (bhspta.eventbrite.com), scheduled to step off on Oct. 19.

Major sponsors of this year's event were aLoft Hotels, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Home Depot, Michael's Pizza, Ozinga Concrete and Sports Authority.

"It is our pleasure to support great local events like the Bolingbrook Soccer Club's annual Labor Day Soccer Festival," said Tim Ozinga of Ozinga Ready Mix Concrete, Inc., in a news release. "This event draws families from all over northern Illinois to Bolingbrook and demonstrates what makes this growing community wonderful."
