Girl's Soccer: Waubonsie Valley Ousts Bolingbrook in Regionals

Waubonsie Valley 3, Bolingbrook 0. Warriors' defense shines in shutout of Lady Raiders.

The defending state champion Waubonsie Valley girls soccer team scored early, then often and cruised to an IHSA regional win over Bolingbrook on Tuesday.

Bolingbrok fell behind with less than four minutes in on an own goal. In the second half, Waubonsie Valley barraged Bolingbrook with nine shots on goal, two of which found the back of the net.

After a Bolingbrook foul, Waubonsie Valley sophomore Jenna Romano stepped up for a free kick close to midfield. Romano drove a stellar shot from 47 yards out to take a 2-0 lead at the just minutes into the second half.

Waubonsie Valley added a final goal from the foot of of junior Shannon Donelson when she volleyed a cross from senior Megan Green into the goal.

"We don't think of last year, we just play our hardest," Donelson said. "If we work together as a team, we will do pretty well. We need to know whats going on and fight for it. We will work our hardest."

At the end of the night, the Warriors had 15 shots on goal compared to Bolingbrook's five.

Bolingbrook senior forwards Brianna Carcerano, Gaby Pontarelli, Shannon Ullery and Erika Banks played in their final game as a Lady Raider while Waubonsie Valley advanced to the second round of the regionals.

"There's some pressure from last year," Romano said. "We need to take one game at a time to build our confidence. We've been working well together as a team. We need to keep that consistency through the playoffs."
