Jane Addams Boys Basketball to Play for Third in State

After losing the state semifinal Saturday, the Jane Addams Middle School eighth grade basketball team will play for third place Thursday.

Jane Addams Middle School’s 8th grade boys basketball team will bring home its fifth Illinois Elementary School Association state championship series trophy in the past 11 years after winning a quarterfinal contest Saturday afternoon before losing in the semifinals Saturday night.

The Mustangs (23-3) will meet Liberty Junior High School (24-3) of New Lenox at 6 p.m. Thursday at Bartonville Limestone High School in a battle for third place. East St. Louis Lincoln (22-1) and Springfield Jefferson (25-0) play for the title at 7:30 p.m.

Addams posted a 42-33 quarterfinal win over previously unbeaten Parker Junior High of Flossmoor as Calvell Randall scored 14 points and Joseph Yesufu and Trey Mack each hit a pair of 3-pointers on the way to 12-point performances. Cameron Harris added 4 points.

The Mustangs, who expanded a 12-8 first quarter lead into a 24-16 halftime advantage, outscored Parker 14-7 in the third quarter to put the game away.

Springfield Jefferson turned the tables on Jane Addams in the semifinal contest jumping out to a 17-6 first quarter lead and never looking back. It was 34-18 at halftime and 55-30 after three quarters.

Randall led all Mustangs scorers with 11 points. Mack and Yesufu scored 9, Harris 5 and Capri Stewart hit a bucket.

Other members of the Jane Addams team include Matt Bielawski, Cameron Faulk, Mark Bennett, Elijah Porter, Jonathan Banks, Domenic Kimak, Jack Eken, Antwon Allen, Cameron Harrell and Nana Akenten. They are coached by Josh Gage with assistance from Jared Ploger.

Jane Addams Middle School has become a regular fixture at the IHSA state tournament, having sent seven boys basketball teams down state in the last five years. Over the past 11 years, Addams teams have played in the state finals eight times coming home with three seconds and a fourth prior to this year.
