Learn Healthy Eating at Fountaindale Public Library

Learn how to plan a menu and get info on superfoods at the Fountaindale Public Library this month.

"Reading is So Delicious" is this year's summer reading theme for . 

So staff wanted to offer healthy food programming to complement the "delicious" theme. 

From food programs to yoga, you can learn how to plan a healthier menu, find foods that will burn fat and find healthy desserts.

"(These programs) are important for the community," said Maureen Garzaro, programming librarian for Fountaindale Public Library. "Health programs really work in this community. People want to try to improve their lifestyle. They want to see what other people think. What are other recipes for dinner and other ways to be healthy." 

Usually around 30 people attend these programs, Garzaro said. The programs also foster discussion.

"If you come to one of these programs, there will be at least five people (in the Q&A sections) asking questions," Garzaro said. "People always want to learn how to cook a different way and use different ingredients." 

Coming to the library is a good place to start for healthy living. The library brings supplemental materials for check out to each of the programs.

  • Eat to Burn Fat: July 10, 7 to 8:30 p.m., Meeting Room A. John Chase from Inspired Journey Fitness will present diet tips about delicious foods you can eat that will help you burn fat and lose weight.
  • Menu Planning: July 12, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Meeting Room B. If you struggle with the daily question of 'What's for dinner?' then this presentation will surely make it easier for you to answer it. We will discuss the reasons for menu planning and how to menu plan. We will talk about different options that will make your life easier. We will also highlight quick, healthy menu ideas and discuss creating lunches for your school children.
  • Yoga: July 16, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Meeting Room A. Yoga Instructor Carole Savard will show you how to relax and stretch at the library. Please bring your own yoga mat or large towel. Teens Welcome!
  • Healthy Dessert in Under a Minute: July 22, 2 to 3:30 p.m., Meeting Room A. Learn how to prepare then taste two fast-n-easy desserts. Each recipe, which can be prepared in less than a minute, uses the freshest organic ingredients of the season. These 60-second desserts are healthy, earth-friendly, and sure to become family favorites! Attendees receive a copy of the recipes with their nutritional breakdown plus a sample taste of each prepared dessert from the demo.
  • Yoga: July 23, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Meeting Room A. 
  • Eat Well for Less: July 26, 6:30 to 8 p.m., Meeting Room B. Groceries are the second biggest household expense! In this eco-friendly program, audience members learn dozens of expert tips, insider secrets and registered-dietitian approved strategies to save time and money including how to shop smart, save on cooking gear, conserve energy in the kitchen and stock one’s kitchen pantry to make whipping up nutritious and tasty meals in minutes a snap.
  • Yoga: July 30, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Meeting Room A.
