Flood Watches Expire Early, DuPage River Stays Below Flood Stage

All weather advisories for Bolingbrook have expired. The National Weather Service had predicted the DuPage River would reach 20 feet Thursday morning. The river peaked at 17.09 feet overnight and has started to recede. Flood stage is 19.5 feet.

Hail that was one inch in diameter was reported in the Bolingbrook/Aurora/Griffith area during Wednesday's storms, according to WGN Meteorologist Tom Skilling. Wind gusts of 52 mph were reported in Romeoville. 

A river flood warning has been issued for the east branch of the DuPage River in Bolingbrook from 4 a.m. Thursday to 9:30 p.m. Thursday. At 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday the river was at 16.5 feet and rising "very rapidly," according to the National Weather Service. Flood stage is 19.5 feet. 

Minor flooding is expected.

The river is forecast to rise to nearly 20 feet Thursday morning and fall below flood stage by Thursday afternoon. At 19.5 feet, Royce Road floods. 

A flash flood warning remains in effect until 2:30 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for southern Will County until 2:30 a.m. The NWS estimates that two to three inches of rain had already fallen on the area with more rain expected.

A Bolingbrook Patch reader reported seeing a funnel cloud in Bolingbrook around 5:30 p.m. There have been no other confirmations of that spotting as of yet. A flash flood warning has been issued for northern Will County until 9 p.m. Flooding is expected in Bolingbrook.

A flash flood warning has been issued for southwestern DuPage County and northwestern Will County until 7:30 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Thunderstorms in the Naperville area have caused heavy rainfall and radar has indicated nearly 2 inches of rain over the past hour, according to the National Weather Service.

A funnel cloud has been spotted in Plainfield. Outbound Metra trains are being held due to weather. Golf-ball size hail has been reported in Oswego.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Will County until 6:45 p.m. From the alert:

A LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WAS LOCATED ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM NORTH AURORA TO 7 MILES NORTH OF MORRIS... AND MOVING EAST AT 50 MPH. THE ROTATION WITH THESE STORMS HAS SHOWN SIGNS OF WEAKENING... HOWEVER THE STRAIGHT LINE WINDS ARE LOOKING MORE SIGNIFICANT.

THESE ARE VERY DANGEROUS STORMS.

HAZARD... GOLF BALL SIZE HAIL AND 80 MPH WIND GUSTS...

The following are the current weather alerts issued for Will County:
  • Severe thunderstorm watch until 1 a.m. Thursday
  • River flood watch (east brunch of DuPage River in Bolingbrook) from 1 a.m. Thursday to 1 a.m. Friday
  • Flash flood watch until 4 a.m. Thursday

Update 4:30 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Will County through 1 a.m. for seven counties including Will and DuPage counties.

Benedictine University has evacuated the campus and, as of 5 p.m., North Cenral College and College of DuPage are closed due to weather.

About 120 flights have been canceled at O'Hare Airport because of severe weather, according to ABC7, and Navy Pier has canceled its fireworks show, all BestBeerGarden performances, and tonight’s #CirqueShanghai shows.

Update 4 p.m.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Kendall, Kane, Will and Grundy counties through 9 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service office in Chicago, widespread severe weather will be a possibility Wednesday.

"Some of the thunderstorms will have the potential to produce damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes," according to the National Weather Service's Hazardous Weather Outlook. "Heavy rainfall will be possible with any thunderstorm, which could lead to localized flash flooding."

A flash flood watch is in effect for Will County Wednesday afternoon through late Wednesday night.

Widespread rainfall of one to three inches is likely north of a line from Dixon to Gary, with locally higher amounts. There is the potential for very high rainfall in some of the stronger storms. The heavy rain will fall over highly urbanized areas of Rockford and Chicago.

Thunderstorms Wednesday night could "congeal into a long-lived squall line called a "derecho" with a more widespread damaging wind threat in this region," according to the NWS. A "derecho" can involve sustained winds of 75 mph.

According to the weather service, residents of Bolingbrook could see:
  • STRONG TORNADOES
  • DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 75 MPH
  • HAIL TO THE SIZE OF BASEBALLS
  • VERY HEAVY RAINFALL WHICH COULD CAUSE FLASH FLOODING
Look for severe weather to being late Wednesday afternoon into the early evening.

There is a river flood watch for the east beach of the DuPage River in Bolingbrook. At 11:15, the river stage was 15 feet. Flood stage is 19.5 feet. The river is forecast to go above flood stage by early Thursday at 21 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

North Weber and Naperville roads will be affected.
