No Injuries in Two-Vehicle Crash on I-55 at Lemont Road
Black ice turns many area roadways and expressways into skating rinks.
No one was hurt in a multi-vehicle traffic collision Tuesday morning on I-55 at Lemont Road, according to Illinois State Police District 2 Sgt. Terry Murphy.
And, because of hazardous driving conditions and a high volume of spinouts and accidents, Murphy said emergency responders investigated the incident, determined it was not serious in nature and sent the motorists on their way.
A police/fire dispatch was sent out at 6:53 a.m. Tuesday to alert first-responders of the mishap. A few minutes later Illinois State Police District 5 officials sent out an alert warning motorists for the second time in two days of hazardous road conditions.

The alert covered a wide swath:
- All of Interstate 55 from I-355 to Dwight Road especially the following areas: I-55 and IL Route 53 area; I-55 and IL Route 126 area; I-55 and I-80 area.
- All of Interstate 80 from Harlem Avenue to LaSalle Road especially the following: I-80 and LaGrange area; I-80 between U.S. Route 30 and Larkin areas; DesPlaines River Bridge; Route 1 still extremely dangerous condition.
Unfortunately, many already were on their way to work. And others were involved in minor mishaps such as the one on I-55 at Lemont Road.
“I talked with my dispatch people and we didn’t find any report of anyone being sent to one of the nearby hospitals,” Murphy said. “So, it looks like it was not a personal injury accident, just a property damage incident.”
And thank goodness for that.
“(My) husband tried to get to the city at 5 a.m. I-55 north had so many accidents and so much black ice he came back home,” said Denise Windle in a Bolingbrook Patch Facebook post.
“Also Weber North of 55,” responded Roger McCluskey.
Robert Pearce expressed his frustration with motorists like this on Facebook:
“People just NEVER learn to listen to the news, weather, or recommendations by the state and local PD’s to STAY THE HELL OFF THE ROADS,” he said.
Lauren Congdon spotted the potential for danger and shared her personal driving experience on Facebook.
“Light post down across road on 53 a little past Boughton & 53,” she said. “I hope these people are still alive. It could have been me just earlier this morning.”
Dawn Ivkovich-Barajas summed up the situation like this on Facebook:
“55 complete disaster … Got on at Weber and took a solid hour to get to 355 and Boughton.”
