State Police Advise Motorists to Be on Lookout for Hazardous Conditions

Blowing and drifting snow is causing wipeouts on a number of area roadways, according to Illinois State Police tropper DeAnn Falat.

Because travel is expected to remain hazardous for the remainder of the day today and for much or all of Tuesday, the Illinois State Police has issued a traffic alert.

Motorists are advised to be on the lookout for hazardous road conditions. The alert covers all of I-55 from I-355 to Dwight Road; all of I-80 from Harlem Avenue to LaSalle Road; and Route 1, which is extremely dangerous because of blowing and drifting conditions.

"Please use extra caution if on the roadways today and tomorrow," said trooper DeAnn Falat in the alert. "Also, remember to slow down and change lanes from all emergency vehicles conducting duties with their emergency lights activated.

"Due to the excessively low temperatures and heavy winds, causing snow drifts across the roadways, several vehicles are losing control and crashes are occurring."
