“Low Light” - What is that and is that what I should have asked for?!?

Tribeca Salon Services is excited to answer a question from Candice in Naperville regarding the meaning of “low light”.  Not sure about what it is you’re asking for?  Understanding the meaning of hair color terms is so important!  Knowing the meaning behind what you’re asking for can be the difference between loving your hair or wishing the receptionist had told you there were no available appointments!

When I went to the salon I asked for highlights, but I think I needed something else.  My blonde is brassy and gross.  What does “low light” mean and is this what I should have asked for?  - Candice from Naperville

Dear Candice,

Brassy and gross?!?  Oh no!  We can’t have that.  Okay, the best way to explain a “low light” is to show you the picture of my featured model, Lisa Deese.  Her hair had been previously highlighted, but the lighter tones began to blend with her natural color, leaving her looking like an all over blonde without any dimension.  Adding several panels or larger sections of a “low light”, or darker color, added the much needed depth that then allowed her blonde pieces to stand out.  Blonde always looks more striking when it’s next to something deeper.  Adding the darker color or “low light” next to the blonde helps the hair to continue looking highlighted, instead of looking like an all over blonde.  If the hair is repeatedly highlighted (lighter color), the overall effect will end up being just blonde.  If you are looking for more of a natural look, low lights will transform your all over blonde into something that looks like your own color, but with a sun kissed effect.  The low light added to my model not only made her blonde stand out, it also added warmth to her skin.  The overall effect creates a much more dramatic play of highs and lows, darks and lights.  I hope this helps, Candice!  You knew what you wanted; you just weren’t sure how to ask for it.  Now you do!  Now go ask Santa for those low lights!
