Kindergarten student Chaz Swinarski shows no fear as he sits on Bubba II, a 9-foot, 250-pound North American alligator that was among the visitors Jim Nesci brought to Tibbott Elementary School as part of his Cold Blooded Creatures Conservation Through Education show.

WWII Vets Sought for Free Honor Flight: Operation Locate a Hero

Regional Honor Flight Teams are being formed in the Lincoln-Way communities.

Regional teams are being formed to help identify the estimated 20,000 surviving World War II Vets in the southwest suburbs. The goal is to get as many as are able to participate in the free, one-day Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. Operation Locate a Hero for the southwest suburbs is headquartered at New Lenox Village Hall. According to Nancy Hoehn, economic development director, those from throughout the Lincoln-Way communities might be particularly interested in joining this effort. However, volunteers from Plainfield south and from Minooka west are invited to join in the regional effort. A meeting is planned for the day after Memorial Day, from 6-8 pm. May 28 at New Lenox…

Boy Scouts of America Votes to Allow Gay Scouts, But Not Leaders

Gay adults are still not allowed to participate as scoutmasters or in other leadership roles.

The Boy Scouts of America voted Thursday to allow gay scouts into its ranks, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.  The vote ends a ban that existed for the organization's entire 103-year history.
