Anti-Bullying Expert to Valley View Students: Keep Your Spirit Burning Brightly

Author and speaker Jodee Blanco spoke to A. Vito Martinez and Lukancic middle schools Tuesday about bullying.

“Don’t change for anyone or anything.” So says nationally renowned author and speaker Jodee Blanco who visited Romeoville Tuesday to share her mind-boggling personal bullying experiences with students at both A. Vito Martinez and Lukancic middle schools. “Never let anyone touch your spirit,” the author of Please Stop Laughing at Me said. “Every one of you has a bright candle burning inside you that allows you to get back up and try again even when you don’t feel like it.” Bullies, she said, don’t understand the damage they do to their classmates. “They damage you for life.” Drawing on what she termed her “nightmare” school years, Blanco told students about “the kid nobody wanted to be caught dead hanging out with.” “You never look at us. …

Four VVSD Schools Secure County “Earth Awards”

During award ceremonies at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park students heard they "are proof that every small amount of environmental awareness can have a big impact."

Four Valley View School District 365U schools received Earth Awards in recognition of their commitment to environmental awareness during ceremonies at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in Joliet Wednesday. Schools that received the Earth Award, which is sponsored by the Will County Land Use Department, included R.C. Hill and Hermansen elementary schools and A. Laverty Named Humphrey Principal

Two other administrators named to assistant principal posts Monday.

Bolingbrook High School Assistant Principal Dan Laverty became the new principal at Hubert Humphrey Middle School in Bolingbrook Monday following a unanimous vote by the board of education. Laverty served as BHS’ assistant principal for student services for four years under then-principal James Mitchem, who is the new Valley View superintendent of schools. Laverty’s roles at BHS included overseeing the dean’s office, building operations and maintenance, attendance and security. He has been with Valley View School District 365U for 15 years, starting his career as a language arts teacher at what was then B.J. Ward Middle School in 1996. He became a dean at BHS in 2002 and was named head dean in 2004. A former sergeant in the United States …
