The Friday Food Critic

Friday Food Critic: Andy's Frozen Custard

Each week we nominate a new restaurant for you to review. That's right, you're the local expert.

When it comes to restaurants, Bolingbrook has it covered. We have some great local places that many would consider community gems; we have some restaurants that aren't exactly mom-and-pop but are unique to the area; and we certainly—for better or for worse—have plenty of chains lining our main streets. But what we don't have is a consistent food critic to tell us what's good and what's not.  That's where you come in. We're not egotistical enough to tell you what restaurants you do and don't like. It's your community. You eat the food. You tell us if it passes the mark. That's why we run The Friday Food Critic, where each week, we put a different restaurant on the chopping block. You tell us how you feel about it, what dishes are good, who …

Winning Ingredients Chosen for Andy's Frozen Custard's New Traffic Jam Concrete

Last month, the community was asked to suggest ingredients for the new Good Day Chicago's Traffic Jam Concrete creation, named in traffic reporter Sondra Solarte’s honor.

After sifting through hundreds of responses from the community, Andy’s Frozen Custard has chosen the ingredients that will make up it’s newest concrete creation. Created in honor of traffic reporter and Bolingbrook resident Sondra Solarte, the Good Day Chicago's Traffic Jam Concrete concoction includes vanilla frozen custard mixed with strawberries, caramel and Oreo cookies. “Those were the three most popular ingredients requested so that’s what’s in the Traffic Jam,” said Donna Scherner, Andy's media relations representative. An explanation accompanies each of the suggested ingredients. “The strawberries stand for the brake lights we often see in the traffic we sit in,” Scherner said. “The Oreo represents the hundred miles of pavement we …

Five Things to Know Today: Sept. 21

Looking for things to do? Stuff to know? People to meet? We've got it all in our "Five Things" feature.

1. Peterson Trial to Begin in the Next Few Months? A fifth bid to get the Drew Peterson out of the Will County jail fell on deaf ears at the Illinois Supreme Court on Monday. Peterson has been locked since May 2009 on charges he murdered his third wife, Kathleen Savio, and has been in legal limbo since prosecutors appealed a ruling on hearsay evidence the day before his trial was to start in July 2010. Peterson is being held on a $20 million bond. His attorneys contend he should be free while waiting on a prosecution appeal. But according to a report, the ruling left Peterson’s attorneys “hopeful” the high court will not hear the appeal from prosecutors, which could clear the way for Peterson to stand trial in the next few months. “We’re …

Looking for some relief from the heat? You're in luck! Sounds good but Culver's and Andy's serve frozen custard, not ice cream. If you ask for ice cream at either place, an employee will politely correct you and say custard.   more ›
