Mitchem on Williams: 'It All Comes Back to the Numbers'

Soon-to-be Supt. Jim Mitchem says he'll hold himself 'accountable for all things Valley View.'

Jim Mitchem never expected smooth sailing. But the next superintendent of the Valley View School District may not have thought the water would grow so choppy as quickly as it has. Having yet to spend an official day as the head of the district, Mitchem and his decision-making has already come under fire in the form of his first official hire—his successor as Bolingbrook High Schoolprincipal, Fabby Williams. Report: Future BHS Principal Unresponsive to Interests of Faculty, Students

Austin Polytechnical Academy teachers say Fabby Williams' administration has poor communication skills.

Upon being hired by the Valley View School Board in February, soon-to-be Bolingbrook High School Principal Fabby Williams said he would make it a priority to make sure every classroom had a “good, effective teacher who cares about children.” But according to a New York Times article, Williams’ track record says otherwise. The article, published Thursday, says Williams, currently the interim principal at Austin Polytechnical Academy in Chicago, fired some academy teachers that had received excellent ratings the year before. In May, Williams fired seven teachers and gave five of them “do not hire” designation, which bans them from future employment from any school in the Chicago Public Schools system, the report said. Since I spoke to him two years ago, he has not done what he stated he will do. Now I hear that he is basically "pulling" grades from the system by allowing repeat tests and no homework. If this is true, and I am not sure as it has been a while, I can say I am AGAINST any and all removal of homework or lack of pressure or responsbility to passing tests.
