Celebrate Black History Month in Bolingbrook

Celebrate Black History Month with several events in Bolingbrook in February.

Honor Black History Month Black History Month history  Black History Month is celebrated in the U.S. throughout the month of February. American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week to commemorate the contributions that people of African descent have made to our nation. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for the celebration to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and editor Frederick Douglass. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U.S. presidents declare February National African-American History Month. Fountaindale Public Library to Host Black History Month Events

Fountaindale Public Library will partner with the Bolingbrook Black History Awareness Club for events throughout February.

Fountaindale Public Library will partner with the Bolingbrook Black History Awareness Club to host Black History Month events throughout February.  African American Genealogy Workshop Feb. 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Learn about slavery's roots and consequences, including two presentations.  “Spellbinder” Walter King Jr. Feb. 17, 2 p.m.  A 45-minute program from a man who has performed with "Bill Cosby, Gladys Knight, Jennifer Hudson and The Temptations," according to the Bolingbrook Reporter.  Check back for more programs.
