Woodson established Black History Week to commemorate the contributions that people of African descent have made to our nation. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for the celebration to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and editor Frederick Douglass. Fountaindale Public Library will partner with the Bolingbrook Black History Awareness Club to host Black History Month events throughout February. African American Genealogy Workshop Feb. 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Learn about slavery's roots and consequences, including two presentations. “Spellbinder” Walter King Jr. Feb. 17, 2 p.m. A 45-minute program from a man who has performed with "Bill Cosby, Gladys Knight, Jennifer Hudson and The Temptations," according to the Bolingbrook Reporter.
