Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and other area hospitals are limiting who and how many people can visit hospital patients due to concerns about spreading the flu, according to a release. Will County is seeing "significantly more" flu activity this flu season, and it's not too late to get a flu shot, according to health officials. In December, 19 Will County patients required Intensive Care Unit (ICU) hospitalization due to influenza-related issues, according to a Will County Health Department press release. Only one ICU hospitalization involving influenza was reported in Dec. 2011. "We're seeing significant increases involving respiratory problems consistent with influenza-like illness," said John Kahler M.D., FAAP, Chief Medical Officer for the Will County Community Health Center in Joliet in the release. Cases of the flu are already rising above normal levels this year. The Will County Health Department is urging residents to get a flu shot during National Influenza Vaccination Week.
Flu season is hitting hard in some parts of the country and people – particularly those most at risk – are being cautioned to get a flu shot if they haven’t already. December 2-8 is set aside as National Influenza Vaccination Week to highlight the importance of getting the flu vaccination.
