District’s future assistant curriculum superintendent for grades 6-12 briefs Valley View board members on first change since 1997.

In 1997 most of us had dial-up Internet, Bill Clinton was beginning his second term in the White House and James Cameron’s Titanic was raking in more money than any other film in history. I taught my kids that you are judged by how you treat other people, not by how other people treat you. As a victim of bullying myself as a child, I know how painful it can be, and how the anger, hurt and sense of helplessness can affect you for years. The idea that kids who bully have problems of their own, dysfunctional home lives, low self-esteem, etc., are the only ones or even the primary …   more ›

Bolingbrook Principal Named Next Valley View Superintendent

The Valley View school board voted Monday to make James Mitchem, the principal of Bolingbrook High School, the district's next superintendent.

The Valley View school board was so eager and happy to name Bolingbrook High School Principal James Mitchem as their next superintendent that the board nearly forgot to record all of its votes. Mitchem was asked to say a few words about his soon-to-be promotion during the board's regularly scheduled meeting Monday night. The only problem was that the job wasn't officially his, as three members of the board had yet to vote. "We're expecting great things from Jim … the sky is the limit for him," Board President Steven Quigley said. "I think he will be here for a good long time." Mitchem…

Richard, I like your point. Do we hire someone we like and know vs someone that can make a difference? This poses a great question into what I call "accountability". I would like to see the school board measures put into place that will grade/ monitor Mr. Mitchem and Mr. Fabby in thier new roles. What expectations do we need to set to hit our goals.
