A fundraiser hosted by a Bolingbrook resident battling breast cancer will be held Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
A Bolingbrook woman battling breast cancer is hosting the fourth annual candlelight "Bowling for Boobs" fundraiser at the AMF Bolingbrook Lanes. The fundraiser will take place Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. and is the support of the Chicagoland Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure this Mother's Day, May 12. Kathy Barri was diagnosed with Stage 0 Carcinoma Situ breast cancer in 2008 at the age of 50. Barri caught the disease early but still had to endure 30 rounds of radiation with several boosters over the past five years. Barri's support of finding a cure for breast cancer is strong and the support extends to her entire family who also support the cause. This year her team "Treasure Chests" is setting their goal for 30 to 40 walkers and hope to …

By the nature of its side effects, cancer treatment can make a private battle a very public affair. For a woman with cancer, having a bald head, pale skin or a missing breast can make her feel like she's being targeted by a bright spotlight and a banner that says, "Cancer patient." But now more than ever, there are resources for women that will put the spotlight back on their work, their accomplishments and their life—and change that banner to simply read, "Woman." Here are a few local resources that specialize in helping women with cancer: Girl on the Go provides private or in-home wig consultations for women with cancer, with locations in 12 states, including Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New …

Kim Jewett's Thoughtful Thursdays program organizes a huge fleece-blanket making event at Grande Park Elementary.
When Kim Jewett created her Thoughtful Thursdays campaign, she never quite expected it to grow as much as it has. But the Plainfield resident, currently preparing to undergo radiation treatment for her second battle with breast cancer in the last three years, has started a movement that will only continue to grow and inspire. Jewett was recently named a Huffington Post Person of the Day, which is awarded to individuals who are confronting issues and making a difference in their communities. Several of the previous events that Jewett had done with Thoughtful Thursdays include volunteering at Feed My Starving Children, writing letters to service men and women and raising money for local charities. Last Thursday, Jewett hosted a fleece-…

Kim Jewett is 'surviving and thriving' with her acts of kindness program, Thoughtful Thursdays.
UPDATE: Kim Jewett has been chosen as the Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day, which features stories of people across the nation who are confronting major issues and making a difference in their community. Congratulations, Kim! -------------------------------- Kim Jewett may have been diagnosed for the second time with breast cancer, but rather than dwell on it she has chosen “to inspire” instead. Three years ago, when Jewett was 31, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This February, she was diagnosed again. To distract herself from her sickness, the Plainfield woman and Grande Park Elementary mom, implemented “Thoughtful Thursdays” over the summer, where she and her family and friends would do something thoughtful for others …

You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD. Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, each year, more than 200,000 American women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 American women will die from…

We want to help you pay tribute to your lost loved ones by publishing their photographs and hearing their stories.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month turns a pink spotlight on our health. For some of us, it’s a reminder to schedule a mammogram. For others, it’s a chance to join an event that raises money for research or celebrates the survivors in our communities. For those who have lost a loved one to breast cancer, we honor them with races, with luminaries, with moments of silence. Though Breast Cancer Awareness Month lasts only 31 days, we never forget. In Patch communities all over the country, we want to help you pay tribute to your lost loved ones by publishing their photographs and hearing their stories. You are welcome to share your stories of these special people with others in our community. You can even submit photo or video tributes of your …
