ABH School Supply Donation Comes at 'Perfect' Time for Humphrey

The past few years Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital has donated book bags to several VVSD elementary schools. This year, the hospital donated more than $1,500 in supplies.

Humphrey Middle School Principal Dan Laverty called it “perfect timing” when officials from Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital delivered thousands of school supplies to the Bolingbrook middle school Thursday. The supplies, which were either donated by staff members throughout the hospital or purchased through the approximately $1,500 contributed by the hospital’s medical staff, included index cards, paper, scissors, spiral notebooks, pencils, erasers, crayons, markers, pocket folder and glue sticks. “At the beginning of the school year our teachers collect supplies for the kids whose families can’t afford them, but we have already handed out most of those supplies,” Laverty said. “This is perfect timing.” “We do this every year,” said Herman …

Giving Back: American Red Cross, Scarecrow 5K, Teaching Opportunities

There are plenty of ways around the area to volunteer and contribute to society. Below, some upcoming opportunities.

WHAT: ESL Teaching Opportunity WHERE: St. Joseph Services, Bolingbrook WHEN: 12:45 to 3:15 p.m. Thursdays through Nov. 3 WHY HELP: Volunteers are needed to help teach basic English skills to adult students. Assigned classroom workbooks will be provided, and volunteers will have orientation and observe a class before teaching. REQUIRED SKILLS: Volunteers must be older than 18 and make a minimum six-month commitment, with at least two hours of in-class class and a half-hour of preparation per week. A 10-hour online training will be required. Volunteers also should be prepared to shadow two classes prior to teaching, and must provide a copy of their resume and two professional references. Whiz Kids: Bolingbrook High School Cheerleading Squad

The BHS cheerleading program will lead an effort to raise funds for students in need by selling spirit items and seeking cash donations at upcoming Raider football games.

Each week, Bolingbrook Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments. We want to hear about these amazing children and teens and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid. Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout? Did your local soccer team take the championship?
