Valley View School District 365U Board members said the vote would not affect the 2012-2013 school calendar.
The Valley View School District 365U Board of Education approved a waiver of three school holidays Monday night. The three holidays are Abraham Lincoln's Birthday (Feb. 12), Casimir Pulaski Day (first Monday in March) and Christopher Columbus Day (second Monday in October). The board needed to waive Abraham Lincoln's Birthday as a school holiday since Feb. 12, a Tuesday, is scheduled as a school day on the 2012-2013 school calendar. The district decided to waive the other two holidays to have flexibility in the future to use those days for potential student or teacher use. Both Casimir Pulaski Day and Columbus Days are non-attendance days for teachers and students for the 2012-2013 school year. Board members called the vote a "…

It seems not many people have much to say about this holiday. Perhaps because it should never have been made a holiday in the first place....and with any luck, my children's children will never have to miss school for the sake of celebrating this man.
