The week was packed with Drew Peterson, but it looks like we're not going to be seeing so much of him anymore.
It was Drew Peterson all day every day in the week that just ended. It started out with a hearing to see if he needs to have a new murder trial, and that hearing went on for another two days. A college professor and a retired judge both got on the witness stand and told how former Peterson attorney Joel Brodsky not only failed to provide effective counsel at this summer's murder trial, but also committed an ethical violation by entering into a publicity contract with his client. Brodsky's former law partner got up as well and claimed Brodsky physically attacked her in the Chicago office they shared. The Will County Sheriff's Department didn't wait long to send Drew Peterson off to start his "life of hardship and abuse." Less than 24 hours after Peterson spoke those words in court and was sentenced to 38 years in prison, staff at the Will County jail had the disgraced ex-Bolingbrook cop packed up, out the door and on his way to Stateville Correctional Center. Drew Peterson held his tongue for nearly four years after being charged with the murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. But just before he learned how long he was going to spend in prison, he let it all out. "I didn't kill Kathleen!" a deranged Peterson screamed from the witness stand. After a plea for a new trial, Drew Peterson was sentenced Thursday after being found guilty in the first-degree murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio.
Updated 5:30 p.m. Family members of both Kathleen Savio and Stacy Peterson spoke following Thursday's sentencing hearing. Henry Savio, Kathleen's brother, said Drew Peterson "deserves to stay in jail forever," according to a tweet from the Trib's Stacy St. Clair. Peterson is "gonna go to hell and my sister is gonna be there to watch him," Henry Savio said. Drew's rant was "constant lies." "He battered her until the very end," said Savio's sister, Sue Doman. Doman said Drew Peterson's rant "almost scared me to death," but she had to defend her sister. Doman was removed from court for calling Peterson a liar. The lawyers for convicted wife-killer Drew Peterson argued for two days that he was deprived of a fair trial by an attorney more worried about becoming a media darling than representing his client. The first witness in the hearing to determine whether convicted wife-killer Drew Peterson will get a new murder trial testified that attorney Joel Brodsky attacked her in the law office they shared. "There was an incident where he physically attacked me and the police had to be called," Chicago attorney Reem Odeh said during the hearing Monday morning.
