Electronics Recycling Goes Mainstream in 2012

Illinois residents will no longer be able to toss the electronics out in the trash. Jan. 1 a new state law goes into effect banning electronics from landfills.

Electronics are always hot items to give or receive over the holidays. Whether you have a new flatscreen TV, laptop, DVD or MP3 player your old electronics may be left waiting in a pile to go out with the trash. Soon, tossing those items in the trash will no longer be an option. A new state law that goes into effect Jan. 1 bans all electronics from landfills and requires recycling of electronics. Local government entities want residents to be aware of the impending change. The electronics ban is part of Senate Bill 2106 that updated the state’s Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act requiring all electronics to be recycled by a registered collector, recycler or manufacturer, according to a news release from DuPage County. Sign Honors Life of Bolingbrook Boy

Parents of Adam Miller hope roadside memorial will serve as reminder that drivers must stay alert.

Charlene Laino and Kathy Bajek were among the friends and family attending a sign unveiling Friday on Plainfield-Naperville Road. The sign that was unveiled memorializes the life of Adam Miller, who would have turned 8 last week. Laino and Bajek said they came to know Adam’s mother as she grieved for her son. Cheryl Miller, of Bolingbrook, began attending a group for grieving parents at St. Raphael Catholic Church. It was there that she began sharing her desire to have a roadside memorial sign in Adam’s honor. Miller learned that since her son’s death wasn’t related to a drunken driving accident that a memorial sign could not be placed on the roadside. She was told she could talk to her representatives in Springfield, and she did. Miller …

No Local Reports of West Nile Virus

Rain coupled with hot, dry weather could lead to perfect conditions for mosquitoes that spread disease.

June’s wet weather could present a buggy problem as we head into what are typically warmer and drier months of July and August, according to an official with the DuPage County Health Department. Mosquitoes love the wet weather and anyone spending time outdoors has probably had an encounter with the pests. Those mosquitoes are pretty much pests; they will bite, but not cause much harm other than make a person itch. Once the weather turns dry, a different kind of mosquito begins to breed, the Culex pipiens. This specific type of mosquito breeds in stagnant water and also spreads West Nile virus, said David W. Hass, communications manager for the DuPage County Health Department. “We could go into a dry spell at any time, the potential is …
