Last Call for The Promenade's Farmers Market

Today marks the last farmers market until next year. Buy fresh. Buy local. Do something good in our 'hood.

Farmers markets are one of the lasting legacies of the 1980s dot.com-era. Their roots can be traced to the San Franscisco Bay Area. Thirty years ago, “yuppies” flush in disposable income that sought to improve the quality of their food unknowingly hastened the “buy fresh, buy local” movement. Although the dot.com’s have all but evaporated, farmers markets continue to flourish. In Bolingbrook, a partnership between The Promenade Bolingbrook and the event management company Make It Happen DuPage brings the concept right outside our door. The Promenade will hold its last market today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. “The market features many food vendors selling homegrown or homemade products,” said Mary Nurse, marketing director of Make It Happen …

Local Beekeeper Saving Bees, Serving Honey at Farmers Market

Bolingbrook's Brian Loomis works to restore local honeybee populations, educate others about his mission. He also sells his honey at The Promenade's farmers market.

After multiple classes, a year of construction and countless hours of networking, Brian Loomis has found himself in charge of tens of thousands of lovely ladies —female bees, that is. Loomis, a 15-year resident of Bolingbrook and a caretaker to nearly 30 beehives, has taken up the hobby of beekeeping over the past few years and has even started his own business, Bolingbrook Honeybee Farms, Inc. Each week, Loomis takes his beehive-designed bus (the bus-hive?) to the road and sets up shop at The Promenade’s weekly farmers market, which runs every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the parking lot in front of the Ulta store. In recent decades, honeybee populations have been in drastic decline and no one really knows why, Loomis said. Some …

I have waited for the return of the Farmer's Market for months. I am very disappointed that the date and time have been changed this year. I hope it is a success for the vendors, but it certainly doesn't work for would-be customers who work during the day and have a long commute home. The market was great last year. I really liked the pies, salsa, produce, bread, and soap. I really hope that it …   more ›
