IKEA Donations Designed to Help STEP Coffee Shop Business

The coffee shop operated by VVSD will have a new look, thanks to IKEA.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from the Valley View School District 365U.  The coffee shop operated by students in Valley View School District’s Secondary Transition Experience Program (STEP) will have a brand new look when it opens for the new school year thanks to IKEA. The international home products company, which has a store in Bolingbrook, this week donated stools, tables, trays, coffee bins and assorted other materials to STEP for use in the school-based business that was launched last year. “IKEA believes in giving back to the community,” said Wanda Fisher, marketing specialist for Bolingbrook’s IKEA store. “We want our communities to thrive so we want to help as many people as we can, especially children.” IKEA …

The coffee shop is a school business that is run by students in the STEP program. We are located in Brooks middle school and we sell to the students and staff in the building. We run solely on the money we make in the coffee shop so we are always looking for donations to help fund our STEP n' coffee business. The money we make in the coffee shop helps fund our STEP program.   more ›

Bolingbrook IKEA to Add Solar Panels, Reduce Carbon Footprint

Solar program of Bolingbrook could produce enough energy to power 112 homes.

IKEA officials announced Thursday that they would be adding solar panels to five of its U.S. stores, including those in Bolingbrook and Schaumburg.  According to a Yahoo! Finance report, the solar panels will extend the IKEA solar presence to nearly 85 percent of its U.S. locations and collectively, the five stores will total 4.8 megawatts (MW) of solar generating capacity, approximately 20,400 panels, and an annual output of 5.62 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity or the equivalent to reducing 4,273 tons of carbon dioxide—equal to eliminating the emissions of 760 cars or providing electricity for 484 homes yearly. IKEA, according to its Web site, strives to create a better everyday life for people and the earth in general.  "This…

Hop, Don't Jump Into Spring Cleaning

Do you know the 12 second rule? If not, you'll surely want to read this.

I've always enjoyed writing a community column because it gives me the opportunity to periodically share "helpful tips" that have made my house feel more of like a home.  In my experience, people who maintain a clean home send multiple messages that speak volumes about organization, pride, and care. If these are the messages you want to communicate, April is a great time to begin working on this area of your life.  The good new is that the job doesn’t necessary need to be completed in one day. Although cleaning is never effortless, it is manageable with a plan. In the Wright household, the cleaning plan becomes a family affair. "I feel people who have the discipline to spread it out. But in my house we have to attack cleaning like ripping …

The Local Dish

Now for Something Completely Different … Dining at Ikea

It may look like a giant furniture and housewares store from the outside, but their restaurant is worth a visit in and of itself.

IKEA RESTAURANT The folks at Ikea take their Swedish roots very seriously, as if you couldn’t tell from the bright yellow and brilliant blue hues of the store’s façade – the colors of the flag of Sweden. But what you find inside this big box is more than just ultra-modern furniture at ultra-low prices with ultra-unpronounceable names. A large portion of their second floor is devoted to a dining court and if you’ve not considered sampling their fare, we humbly suggest you give it a try. It’s a bit like a mini-excursion to Scandanavia and a bargain to boot. Who needs a dollar menu when you can get a plate of Swedish meatballs, a scoop of homemade mashed potatoes and a dollop of lingonberry sauce for just $3.99? (Here’s a helpful tip if you …

Costco Set to Open Tomorrow

The I-355 Interchange's newest retail All-Star is set to come off the bench and take the field, further advancing the area as one of the largest retail locales.

Corporate giant and national warehouse chain extraordinaire Costco is set to open its doors to the public tomorrow morning. Plans to complete the development of Costco in Bolingbrook could make the Boughton Road and I-355 intersection one of the most lucrative in the area. Costco is set to open the wholesale superstore Thursday, bringing yet another corporate giant to the already retailer-heavy intersection. "We will now have some of the largest retailers in the country – or possibly the world for that matter – all at one intersection," said Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar. "[Costco] will be a terrific sales tax generator that will help us continue to deliver the best city services to our residents." Debate over splitting sales tax revenue …
