Bolingbrook Schools’ Family Fitness Night Jan. 14 at the BRAC

Jamic McGee and Independence Elementary Schools, Jane Addams Middle School and Bolingbrook High School are hosting the event.

Walk, bike, run, scoot or drive to Family Fitness Night presented by Independence and Jamie McGee elementary schools, Jane Addams Middle School and Bolingbrook High School from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Center, 200 S. Lindsey Lane. A fitness and nutrition specialist will provide instruction and information on fitness agility, core, cardio, strength, flexibility and healthy living.  Families and community residents are encouraged to take a tour of the Bolingbrook Park District to see the many programs available for them. Independence to Purchase Books with $500 Target Grant

Independence Elementary School will buy books for the school's library with the $500 reading grant.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  Independence Elementary School will purchase books for its library using a $500 reading grant from Target Corporation. “We are always looking for more opportunities to put books and resources into the hands of our students,” said Independence LMC Director Heather Hernandez. “It is essential to increase our resources so that students have access to good literature.” Hernandez and Principal Kim Mulcahy both expressed their appreciation to Target for awarding the grant to Independence. “In alignment with The New View, reading is an essential skill that will foster life-long learners and prepare our students for a successful future,” Hernandez said.  “…

Lukancic Middle School Remembers 9/11

Five schools in Valley View School District 365U have special events planned for the 11th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Lukancic Middle School Teacher Wendy Sifuentes' sixth-grade students were born in 2001.    That's why she decided to organize an event to honor the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, at Lukancic Tuesday. Romeoville police and firefighters shook hands with students as they arrived at school. Students recognized a moment of silence during the daily announcements and heard a short history of the day.  Then, students presented the police and firefighters with "Thank You" posters, each created by a different Lukancic Social Studies class.  "These students have no emotional connection to (9/11)," Sifuentes said. Costco-Bolingbrook Donates Backpacks to Two VVSD Schools

Almost 500 students at B.J. Ward and Independence elementary schools received new backpacks.

Ward and Independence elementary schools will have new backpacks. “We do this where there is need,” said Cyndi DeVoss of the Costco Marketing Department, who said the company believes in being involved in the communities it serves. “A free backpack is a big thing for some of our kids because many of them use their backpacks for two or even three years and they get worn out,” said B.J. Man Turns Himself In for Alleged Sexual Contact with 14-Year-Old Girl

Kevin Louis charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, aggravated battery.

A 19-year-old Bolingbrook man turned himself in to Bolingbrook police Tuesday after he allegedly had sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl in several nearby parks. Kevin Louis, of the 300 block of Clifton Lane, is being charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery. According to police, Louis and the girl had been meeting in several local parks from mid-April to mid-May, including one a few yards away from Independence Elementary School. Bolingbrook Lt. Mike Rompa said Louis turned himself in Tuesday to report physical contact, but has not been taken into custody yet because the warrant was just recently issued.
