Irene King Students Get Science Lesson from Valley View Superintendent

James Mitchem returned to the classroom Wednesday at Irene King Elementary School.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  Valley View School District 365U Superintendent Dr. James Mitchem returned to classroom teaching for the first time in quite a while Wednesday.  Dr. Mitchem, who taught middle school and high school students more than a decade ago, got a taste of elementary school teaching courtesy of Candice Greenwood and her 4th and 5thgrade students. The lesson plan called for a little bit of recess, with some tag and some general fun on the new playground equipment at King, followed by a lesson on lungs including a hands-on lung capacity experiment. Laura Lucas is New Assistant Principal at Irene King

Lucas was previously a reading specialist at Irene King Elementary School.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  Irene King Elementary School Reading Specialist Laura Lucas has been named assistant principal at the Romeoville school, succeeding Jeremy Majeski who left to take a position in another school district. Lucas has been with Valley View School District since the 2003-04 school year, serving as reading specialist at King for a year, reading specialist at B.J. Ward for a year, a kindergarten teacher at Pioneer for four years and an early childhood special education teacher at Pioneer for three years. Prior to that, she was an early childhood inclusive special education teacher at Prairie Children Preschool in Indian Prairie School District 204. A graduate …

Playground, Drop-off Area Construction Underway at King Elementary School

The project at the Romeoville school includes a new playground and will improve parent drop-off access.

Construction crews began working this week on a project to improve parent drop-off access at Irene King Elementary School. The project also includes a new playground. The old configuration, which primarily utilized the front area for student drop-off and pick-up, created conflicts between bus traffic and parents’ vehicles. The new configuration will include a safer parent drop-off zone behind the school that will free up the front of the school for more efficient bus arrivals and departures.          The student drop-off area will be in the shape of a horseshoe, enabling staff to promote a smoother vehicle circulation. When not in use as a drop-of area, students will be able to use the “play and learn area” in the middle of the horseshoe. …
