Jonas Salk Elementary School needs your help to thank Principal Michele Romolt -- and win $5,000 for the school.
A Bolingbrook school is looking for your support. Jonas Salk Elementary School Principal Michele Romolt has been nominated in the Herff Jones Teacher Shout Out contest. The teacher (or principal, in this case) who receives the most votes (depending on school size) will receive $2,500 for herself and $2,500 for her school. Mary Wurster, school psychologist at Jonas Salk Elementary School, was recently named the Illinois School Psychologist Association's Ted Smith Practitioner of the Year Award.
Jonas Salk’s school psychologist, Mary Wurster, was named the Illinois School Psychologist Association’s Ted Smith Practitioner of the Year Award winner at the annual ISPA convention in Springfield Jan. 17. With their school’s mock presidential election just a day away, 10 Jonas Salk Elementary School 5th graders debated the merits of the candidacies of President Obama and Governor Romney in front of their fellow students Thursday afternoon. The debaters, who were selected from a pool of students after making qualifying speeches before debate moderator Jeff Ortmann, spent eight mornings before school researching their assigned candidates and developing public speaking skills. “They learned how to gather ideas and put them together in a way the audience can understand them,” said 5th grade teacher Christina Grigsby, who was the “coach” for the Obama debate …

Editor's Note: The following is a release from the Valley View School District. Nine members of the Lisle-based Pitney Bowes company visited Jonas Salk Elementary School Thursday, volunteering their time to help further the joy of reading for selected second graders. The 55 students, chosen through a random drawing, listened to a reading of “Dear Juno” and then made crafts that related to the story. At the end of the visit, each student received a free book to take home, courtesy of Pitney Bowes.
