VVSD Ready for All-Day Kindergarten

Valley View School District 365U held a symbolic ribbon cutting ceremony Monday that represented several new building additions for the district's all-day kindergarten program.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  All-day kindergarten classes will make their debut at all 12 Valley View School District 365U elementary schools Wednesday. More than 1,000 children will enter newly-created classrooms at 9:05 a.m. and stay until 3:15 p.m. Previously, children attended either a morning session or an afternoon session. To make room for the new program, VVSD put additions on nine schools and renovated facilities in three others. Kindergarten students will be housed in new additions at Independence, Salk and Wood View schools and in remodeled facilities at Oak View, Ward, King, Skoff, McGee, Tibbott, Hermansen, Pioneer and Hill. Valley View Kindergarten Enrollment Continues April 9

Students cannot be enrolled unless all required documents, including student data sheets, are available.

Parents who have not already enrolled their children for kindergarten next fall in Valley View School District 365U schools may do so from Monday, April 9 through Monday, April 30. Youngsters who will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, may attend kindergarten in VVSD schools for the 2012-13 school year. Petition forms for early enrollment for those “exceptional children” born after Sept. 1, 2012 will be available at the Enrollment Office. There is a $300 assessment fee. Enrollment will take place between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday starting April 9, at the VVSD Administration Center, 755 Dalhart Ave., Romeoville. Children who will be five years old on or before Sept. 1, 2012 may attend kindergarten in VVSD schools for the 2012-13 school year. Mitchem Says Valley View Needs All-Day Kindergarten

The program would be part of Mitchem’s efforts to shift district resources toward grades K-3, which he says are crucial to development.

An all-day kindergarten program in the Valley View School District would be ideal for Jim Mitchem's plans to make the district one of the best in the state. The school district's newest superintendent echoed that need during one of his two community forums designed to inform the public on his plan for the district last week. Mitchem has been pushing for an all-day kindergarten program since at least May, when the district asked residents to complete a survey aimed at gauging community interest in all-day kindergarten. According to a committee, 2,259 people responded to the survey, with 85 percent saying it would be a good idea for Valley View to offer the program. Parents weren't too keen on paying a $150 per month fee for the program. But…

I'm all for it. I hope this becomes a reality and although I'm not looking forward to the cost, I am looking forward to the advantage it will bring my Kindergartener in 2012/2013 school year.   more ›
