Defending Will County Champ Qualifies for Valley View District Spelling Bee

Kim Belser, who traveled to Washington, DC, for the Scripps National Spelling Bee last year, has qualified to again compete in the Valley View School District 365U spelling bee.

In what can only be called a battle of epoch proportions, two Humphrey Middle School 8th graders went 93 rounds over two days of competition to determine who will represent the school in the Valley View School District 365U Spelling Bee Feb. 5. Christy and Kim are not strangers to each other. As sixth-graders, Christy edged Kim to move on to district. Last year, as seventh-graders, Kim beat Christy, and not only went on to win the VVSD crown but also won the Will County title and went to Washington, DC, to compete in the national spelling bee. Anti-Bullying Expert to Valley View Students: Keep Your Spirit Burning Brightly

Author and speaker Jodee Blanco spoke to A. Vito Martinez and Lukancic middle schools Tuesday about bullying.

“Don’t change for anyone or anything.” So says nationally renowned author and speaker Jodee Blanco who visited Romeoville Tuesday to share her mind-boggling personal bullying experiences with students at both A. Vito Martinez and Lukancic middle schools. “Never let anyone touch your spirit,” the author of Please Stop Laughing at Me said. “Every one of you has a bright candle burning inside you that allows you to get back up and try again even when you don’t feel like it.” Bullies, she said, don’t understand the damage they do to their classmates. “They damage you for life.” Drawing on what she termed her “nightmare” school years, Blanco told students about “the kid nobody wanted to be caught dead hanging out with.” “You never look at us. …

Lukancic Sixth-Graders Honored at Field Museum Exhibit Opening

Twenty-seven students were guests of honor at the opening of the “Maharaja: The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts” exhibition at the Field Museum of Natural History.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  Twenty-seven Lukancic Middle School sixth-graders had the honor of representing students throughout the Chicago area at Tuesday’s unveiling of “Maharaja: The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts” exhibition at Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. Each time a new exhibition opens at the Field Museum, officials select one school in the Chicago area to be “guests of honor” on Media Preview day. The Lukancic students were acknowledged by Field Museum President and CEO Richard Lariviere at today’s press conference and were then allowed to lead the entire group into the exhibition hall. Field Museum officials provided transportation for the students. …

15 Valley View Runners to Compete in State Cross Country Meet

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  On a cold Saturday, Jane Addams Middle School hosted the IESA Sectional Cross Country meet at Central Park in Bolingbrook. Valley View is sending 15 runners to the State meet next week in Normal, IL. Jane Addams led the pack of qualifiers, with the entire girls team and two individuals of the boys' teams qualifying for state competition. “These girls were so focused and ran so smart," said Jane Addams Coach Adam Thas. The girls were part of the IESA’s first ever AAA format of teams because of the influx of teams joining the IESA. The Sectional included 14 teams, including all the Valley View teams as well as area rivals Homer Glen, Lemont and Woodridge…

Lukancic Middle School Remembers 9/11

Five schools in Valley View School District 365U have special events planned for the 11th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

Lukancic Middle School Teacher Wendy Sifuentes' sixth-grade students were born in 2001.    That's why she decided to organize an event to honor the 11th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, at Lukancic Tuesday. Romeoville police and firefighters shook hands with students as they arrived at school. Students recognized a moment of silence during the daily announcements and heard a short history of the day.  Then, students presented the police and firefighters with "Thank You" posters, each created by a different Lukancic Social Studies class.  "These students have no emotional connection to (9/11)," Sifuentes said. Editor's note: The following is a release from the Valley View School District 365U.  Incoming Lukancic Middle School 6th graders and their parents are invited to attend SPARKS University Tuesday, Aug. 14, to learn more about the school, classes and much more. The evening begins with a cookout in the cafeteria from 5:30 to 6 p.m. with hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks on the menu. Lukancic Figure Skater Wins Top Honors in Colorado

Paige Rydberg took the overall championship in the Broadmoor Open Figure Skating Competition in Colorado this summer.

Paige Rydberg, a student at Lukancic Middle School in Romeoville, earned the Annette Cramer Award for the most outstanding free skate performance in her division at the Broadmoor open figure skating competition in Colorado earlier this summer. The 12-year-old, who lives in Plainfield, won the initial round of competition in the Intermediate Skating category, qualifying for the finals where she won both the short and long programs and the overall championship. The competition took place at the World Arena in Colorado Springs.

Addams Girls Advance to Sectional Finals in Joliet
