The only independent candidate running for a Bolingbrook village board seat has withdrawn from the April 9 election.
The only Bolingbrook village board candidate who was not a part of Mayor Roger Claar's First Party slate has withdrawn from the race. Sign up for our daily email newsletter Like us on Facebook. Tim Dombrow filed to run for one of three open village board seats. His three opponents -- incumbents Mike Lawler and Joseph Morelli and newcomer Maria Zarate -- are all part of the First Party slate. Incumbent Sandra Swinkunas will not for re-election. Mayor Roger Claar and Clerk Carol Penning are also running on the slate and are un-opposed. Dombrow said he was running for a seat on the village board as a way to become more involved in the community. A community member claimed some signatures on Dombrow's petition to run were invalid. Two charities with Bolingbrook ties will receive donations following Thursday's 2013 State of the Village luncheon.
The 2013 State of the Village luncheon in Bolingbrook will benefit two charities with local ties. Five dollars from each ticket sold will be donated to the Lily Cache Special Recreation Association. More than 700 people were in attendance at Thursday's event. Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar also auctioned off two tickets to a Chicago Bulls game, which raised $3,000 for the American Cancer Society. Claar said he requested years ago that a portion of ticket sales from the event be donated to a charity of his choice. The donation to Lily Cache Special Recreation Association will be used for scholarships for those in need. Adventist Bolingbrook's Hospital's pediatric and emergency departments received a special gift Jan. 2. The Egypt Cancer Network and the National Arab American Medical Association donated more than 100 teddy bears to the hospital. Representatives from the Egypt Cancer Network, the NAAMA as well as Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar were on hand to distribute the bears. The cancer network and NAAMA set up collection points around the community to gather together the teddy bears throughout the holiday season. The Egypt Cancer Network is a U.S. based non-profit that helps further cancer education, research and care, as well as medical infrastructure in Egypt. No one had filed to run against Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar in the April 2013 election.
Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar will run unopposed this April for his eighth term in office, according to the Bolingbrook Reporter. No one filed to run against the mayor by the Dec. 26 deadline. Someone could still file to run as a write-in candidate for the election. The deadline to do so is Feb. 7, according to the Reporter. Village Clerk Carol Penning will also run unopposed for re-election. It will be Penning's seventh term in the position. Three trustee positions will be on the April ballot. Those seats are currently held by Joseph Morelli, Michael Lawler and Sandra Swinkunas. Morelli and Lawler will run for re-election and will be joined by newcomers Maria Zarate and Tim Dombrow. Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar and his daughter Lindsey worked a two-hour shift at McDonald's Monday to raise money for Heart Haven OutReach.
Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar spent his birthday Monday taking orders at McDonald's. Claar was behind one register, his daughter, Lindsey, at the other. During the fundraiser, 20 percent of proceeds went to the Bolingbrook non-profit Heart Haven OutReach. Lindsey "Claar" Smith founded the organization about a decade ago. Heart Haven OutReach officials said the McDonald's at Bolingbrook Drive and Briarcliff Road reached out to the non-profit as a way to give back. Heart Haven, or H2O, wanted both Lindsey and Roger Claar to be present, and the day that worked out was Roger Claar's birthday. Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar will spend his birthday "working" at McDonald's for a Heart Haven OutReach fundraiser Monday. Claar will volunteer from 5 to 7 p.m. to greet and serve Bolingbrook McDonald's patrons. The McDonald's character Grimace, H2O founder Lindsey "Claar" Smith and members of the H2O staff will also be present at the event. McDonald's will donate partial proceeds to Heart Haven OutReach.
