There are a lot of athletes from Chicago suburbs—and Patch towns—on some of the best teams in college football this season.
The BCS bowl season has begun, but two area schools will wait until after the new year to play in some of the most prestigious bowl games. Their rosters feature lots of area talent from Chicago suburbs and Patch towns. Notre Dame, the No. 1 team in the country, plays Alabama in the BCS National Championship game Jan. 7. And No. 15 Northern Illinois, a surprise BCS team, heads to the Orange Bowl to play No. 12 Florida State on New Year's Day. A number of athletes from Patch towns, including Bolingbrook, are on the rosters of these teams, as well as others playing in bowl games over the next few weeks. Many are underclassmen probably yet to see game action, but their names are among some of the most powerful rosters in college football. If …

Moore, Bolingbrook High School's power forward and BHS senior, is being highly recruited by dozens of colleges.
Bolingbrook High School's power forward Ben Moore is in high demand. Moore has received around 20 offers to play college ball, according to Coach Rob Brost. More than 25 Division I programs have visited BHS over the past few weeks to watching the Bolingbrook Raider basketball open gyms, according to Brost. Those programs include Illinois, Michigan, Purdue, Missouri, Northwestern, Nebraska, SMU, Colorado State and Minnesota. Indiana, Wisconsin and UTEP are also scheduled to visit. While Moore didn't catch NCAA attention early in his high school career, he's got their attention now. He has now climbed into the Chicago Sun-Times Hoops Report's top 10 prospects in the Class of 2013. Moore averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots…

Thank you, NCAA, for reminding us that football does not come first.
Cheers to the NCAA for kneecapping Penn State for covering up the atrocities of Jerry Sandusky. Finally, collegiate football says education comes first. “Football will never again be placed ahead of educating, nurturing and protecting young people,” NCAA President Mark Emmett said. Let’s hope. Too many schools have lost sight of what matters: the education and formation of young people. Yes, athletics is a part of that. However, the almighty dollar has trumped math and science. Football programs in Big Ten universities rake in the dough, directly through the sport, and indirectly through alumni contributions because of the sport. The $60 million NCAA penalty is a hiccup. Football’s popularity breeds school athletic departments that are 32-…

The former Bolingbrook girls basketball standout will be at the head of one of the most prolific women's basketball teams in the country.
Former Bolingbrook All-American Ariel Massengale has yet to play a single minute in the NCAA and she’s already garnered enough confidence from her hall of fame coach to be given the keys to the University of Tennessee offense. According to a GoVolsExtra.com report, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt named Massengale, an incoming freshman, the starting point guard to one of the most heralded women’s basketball team’s in the country. "It did take me by surprise," Massengale told the Knoxville News Sentinel. Massengale, during her high school career, helped lead Bolingbrook to three-straight IHSA Class 4A state championships and was a major reason why the Lady Raiders were touted as one of the nation’s best teams. But for her to be given the reins …
