Valley View Schools Get Healthy and Active with Fuel Up to Play 60 Program

The Fuel Up to Play 60 program seeks to end childhood obesity within a generation.

More than 70,000 schools across the country have incorporated aspects of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program into their day-to-day routines. The program, which seeks to end childhood obesity within a generation, was launched in 2008 and is underwritten by the National Dairy Council and the NFL. The program has grown rapidly because of high-profile endorsements from the likes of First Lady Michelle Obama and others. The growing support has enabled Fuel Up to Play 60 presenters like Bolingbrook dietitian Robin Levy to ramp up efforts to encourage more school leaders to embrace the program. Levy recently hosted an information session at Jane Addams Middle School to help Valley View School District 365U administrators better understand the program…

BHS Assistant Football Coach 'Paying It Forward' With New Generation

Former Bolingbrook High School athletic standout and NFL player now serves as coach and mentor for Raider football players.

The numbers certainly weren’t in favor of Todd Howard. Less than one-tenth of 1 percent of American men will ever "go pro" for an NFL team. Yet, above all odds, Howard advanced his career from the ranks of Bolingbrook High School to the University of Michigan to the NFL. These days, he’s keeping kids grounded in reality at Bolingbrook High School, where he serves as an assistant coach on the football team. "Guys with his knowledge and expertise about defensive backs are hard to come by," says Bolingbrook head coach John Ivlow. "We are very fortunate to have him." Now at home in Bolingbrook, Howard honors his roots with a personal commitment to pay it forward. He dabbles in a few entrepreneurial ventures and assumes the role of mentor, …

Tailgater's Scores a Touchdown and More During NFL Season

Free halftime buffet during Bears games; sound system tailored to your favorite team; and fun for the kids. Is there any other reason why you shouldn't be at Tailgater's this NFL season?

Tailgater’s Sports Bar and Grill has game watching Chicago Bears games down to a science, No, really, we’re not joking — the Tailgater’s staff runs the whole NFL-game-watching experience with as much precision as an astrophysicist at a moon landing.  There are 40 high-definition TVs to rest your gaze—no matter which direction your eyes may roam, chances are pretty good you’ll still catch the most thrilling parts of a given game. And what’s more, seating is sectioned off so that customers can not only watch, but also hear the game of their choice. It's a veritable sensory bender of football, really. “Our sound and our TVs are better than everybody’s. We’re a real sports bar,” said Bob Zalewski, who has owned Tailgater’s for the last 7½ of …

iPic: Bolingbrook’s Best Spot to Catch an NFL Game as a Couple?

iPic was launched in Bolingbrook this summer, taking over the location at The Promenade from Gold Class Cinemas, and is a great place to catch your favorite game.

The scenario: You’ve waited for it all week and you’re certain this will be the last free Sunday afternoon you have for the next 30 or 40 weeks. All you really want to do is watch the big game. You work hard and deserve a few hours of uninterrupted zone-out time in the company of your favorite team. The problem: Your significant other is not a fan, and you really should commit to doing something with each other under the same roof. The neighborhood solution: Salt Sports Bar, the bar at iPic Theater, where you both can feel like you win, even if the Bears do not. Movies and football are a lot alike, according to Mark Mulcahy, vice president of marketing for iPic Entertainment. “They’re both great escapes,” he said. “When you’re watching, …

Five Things to Know Today: Sept. 7

Looking for things to do? Stuff to know? People to meet? We've got it all in our "Five Things" feature.

1. Construction on Weber Road Bridge Likely to Cause Traffic Delays We featured this story on Tuesday, but it's worth noting to those that missed it that construction crews began work on the Weber Road bridge that crosses over the DuPage River. Crews will work on the bridge, located about a half of a mile north of the Weber and Boughton Road intersection, a half at a time. That means Weber Road will be reduced to one-lane traffic each way for several months.  According to a village release, state inspections in 2009 revealed the deck beams on the bridge needed to be replaced. Delays, officials say, are to be expected in both directions. 2. Ashbury’s Kicks Off Season With 9/11 Benefit Ashbury’s at Boughton Ridge will kick off the 2011 Bears…

Local Bar Managers Rejoice as NFL Lockout Ends

End of league's labor troubles will avoid financial losses at bars, restaurants during fall, winter.

The NFL lockout is over and local business owners are the only ones happier than Bolingbrook fantasy football managers to see football return to the field. According to a Huffington Post report, NFL players voted to OK a final deal Monday, days after the owners approved a tentative agreement, and the sides finally managed to put an end to the 4 1/2-month lockout, the longest work stoppage in league history. The agreement has already put the wheels in motion for local businesses that were in a wait-and-see mindset. Jim Sawyer, general manager of Ashbury's at Boughton Ridge, said Ashbury's would have no doubt lost some revenue had the NFL lockout lasted into the regular season, which is slated to begin Sept. 8. Ashbury's runs several …
