The weather was cooperative, the participants were pumped and it was a fun, family start to the day’s events. “The annual 5K is a kickoff to ‘Summer’s Last Blast,’ which is a festival we put on to thank the residents and everyone who uses the park district throughout the year,” said John Chase, a park district fitness sales manager and race director. Runners started at the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Complex, and traced out the 3.1 mile path that wound through nearby park grounds and residential areas and ended up back at the complex parking lot.  More than …

Joshua - The route was marked on the pavement, and there were volunteers and police officers at the major intersections. Always good to be early to a race with a definite starting time, lol. Thanks, Bolingbrook Park District for a great race! I had fun with friends on a beautiful day.   more ›

Park District to Honor Former Colleague, Now Village Attorney

Former Landscape Architect Jim Boan will have a portion of wooded area named in his honor April 30. Boan was very instrumental in the design of the park district as we know it today.

In 1973, Bolingbrook’s population was a mere 7,800 and Jim Boan had just stepped off the campus of the University of Illinois with a degree in landscape architecture and into the role of Bolingbrook Park District Superintendent of Parks. Employed on the heels of a referendum that earmarked funding to build parks in the village, Boan spearheaded the development of 16 neighborhood park sites as well as overseeing the installation of playgrounds at each of the village’s public elementary schools. Boan will be immortalized April 30 as the Bolingbrook Park District honors his service on the parks behalf, naming 27 acres of open space and high-quality woodlands the James S. Boan Woods at Hidden Oaks Conservation Area. The ceremony, which will be…

I agree that the turn out was low. Either the residents are happy and content or they just don't care. It is a shame that in a country where we have the right to vote and express our opinions by voting, that we take this right for granted. Other countries are fighting and killing each other to have the same rights we take for granted.   more ›

Be Fit Bolingbrook

Teach Your Body to Exercise as a Complete System and Lose Weight

Full-body exercises are ideal additions to a fat-burning exercise program. Getting more muscles involved uses more calories, and the more calories you can burn, the better.

A car is a complex machine. There are lots of moving parts, all of which require regular maintenance. If you fail to maintain any of those parts, others are affected. All of the parts rely on each other to make sure the machine works properly.  If you put all your energy into building the greatest stereo system ever, but you never put any oil into the engine, you might never hear the sound of your Little Deuce Coupe.  Your body works the same way.  It works best when you teach it to work as a system. Bicep curls can help you develop great-looking guns, but they'll do little to help you pick up your suitcase and haul it through an airport.  For this reason and many more, I'm a big fan of multi-joint exercises.  A complex multi-joint …

Holiday Swim at Pelican Harbor

Swimming may be the last thing on people's minds this time of year. But while everyone is busy preparing for Turkey Day and mustering the energy the shopping season requires, now is actually a great time to visit Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park. "This Saturday we will have a food drive — $1 off admission per item brought in," said Kaia Dutler, Bolingbrook Park District aquatic manager. The pool will be open for swimming that day from noon to 8 p.m. "The (donated) food is going to go to our Danceforce Program, who puts together food baskets every year," Dutler said. Clara Houdek, Danceforce recreation supervisor, said the troupe has been donating Thanksgiving meals to needy families for the past nine years. "Our goal for this year is 40 gift …
