Taqueria Muniz in Bolingbrook: Not Your Average Tacos

Taqueria Muniz of Bolingbrook brings gourmet south-of-the-border fare without the trumpets.

Taqueria Muniz is not quite your typical taco place. The restaurant at 133 S. Weber Road opened for business in Oct. 2010 just down the plaza from the Goodwill. The guitar that co-owner and chef Luis Muniz used to play to pass the time in the early days when there weren’t too many customers now rests on a shelf beside the straws and Sweet n’ Low. “There’s a difference between me and just a regular cook,” said Muniz, 22, a 2009 graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Chicago that has been in the restaurant business almost half his life.  The Muniz family—mom, dad, four sisters and one brother—also own Taqueria Muniz of Aurora, which has been open for 10 years. Luis and sister Diana, 27, operate the Bolingbrook location. Diana…

@Lucy, just a little over a month. @Melissa, no problem. Indio's Taueria need to be your next feature. I recommend. @Taco Junkie. Yeah it's location was bad, but a hard to find place & good food made the search worth it. I 've good things about Fire It Up. Indio's Taqueria is new, but their food is real good.   more ›

Friday Food Critic: Charlie's Restaurant

Each week we nominate a new restaurant for you to review. That's right, you're the local expert.

When it comes to restaurants, Bolingbrook has it covered. We have some great local places that many would consider community gems; we have some restaurants that aren't exactly mom-and-pop but are unique to the area; and we certainly—for better or for worse—have plenty of chains lining our main streets. But what we don't have is a consistent food critic to tell us what's good and what's not.  That's where you come in. We're not egotistical enough to tell you what restaurants you do and don't like. It's your community. You eat the food. You tell us if it passes the mark. That's why we run The Friday Food Critic, where each week, we put a different restaurant on the chopping block. You tell us how you feel about it, what dishes are good, who …

Village's Fifth Subway in the Works

Bolingbrook's newest Subway planned for 520 W. Boughton Rd.

Subway wants you to eat fresh—and apparently often in Bolingbrook. The popular sandwich restaurant is in the process of planning a fourth location in Bolingbrook. The Bolingbrook Plan Commission will hold a public hearing for a special use permit for a carry-out restaurant at 520 W. Boughton Rd. ZJ Group, of Oakbrook Terrace, is the applicant. Bolingbrook already has three Subway restaurants at the following locations:  The commission will also a hold public hearing on a planned unit development for Most Valuable Personnel, a temporary staffing agency; discuss development code variances for Jubilee Baptist Church; and vote to approve plan reports on a new gas station at 101 E. Boughton Rd., and a special use permit for a planned commercial…

As the business owner next door to the strip mall, I think that the BB Planning Commission has dropped the ball in planning for this development and all the varied businesses contained therein. That strip mall cannot even handle the garbage load for the businesses there and now they want to add a Subway?? All that garbage just blows over to my funeral home parking lot. Dumpsters there are hardly …   more ›

The Friday Food Critic: You Be the Judge on Bok Choy

Each week, we nominate a new restaurant for you to review. That's right, you're the local expert.

When it comes to restaurants, Bolingbrook's got it covered. We have some great local places that many would consider community gems; we have some restaurants that aren't exactly mom-and-pop but are unique to the area; and we certainly—for better or for worse—have plenty of chains lining our main streets. We could throw some money at a professional food critic but that's not exactly what Bolingbrook Patch is all about. We'd much rather know the opinion of the fine folks that eat there day-in and day-out. We're not egotistical enough to tell you what restaurants you do and don't like. It's your community. You eat the food. You…

New Restaurant Planned for Old Portillo's Building

Coop's Den set to open in March and serve American fare for the 25-and-up crowd.

Having lived in Bolingbrook for more than 20 years, the Coopers are trying their hand at something new in 2012. The couple will open Coop's Den at 148 N. Boughton Rd., the building next door to the old Harold's Chicken Shack and former location of Portillo's. The restaurant was granted a liquor license by the Bolingbrook village board earlier this month. Samantha Cooper, a Bolingbrook resident of 21 years and graduate of Bolingbrook High School, said Coop's Den will be geared towards the 25-years-of-age and older crowd and will serve mostly American fare.  The restaurant is slated to open March 1.  Lawrence Cooper is also a BHS grad and resident for 15 years. He said both of their parents had owned bars so running a restaurant is a family …

Bolingbrook Petco Store to Close in January

New sushi restaurant and tanning salon expected to open in strip mall soon.

In case you're looking for a last-minute gift for your pet, you might want to check out Petco, which is holding a going-out-of-business sale. The Bolingbrook Petco at 1249 W. Boughton Road will close its doors Jan. 21.  Petco might have fallen victim to a saturated market. Bolingbrook residents have more than a few other options when it comes to pet supplies, including Pet Supplies Plus, PetsMart and Petland, all of which have ideal locations. It's the second national chain store to leave Bolingbrook's west side this year. In April, Blockbuster left the same shopping center where Petco is located. A month prior, Borders announced its closing because of financial stress due to bankruptcy.  But it's not all gloom and doom for west-side …
