Bus Driver Has Driven 1.2M Miles for VVSD

Valley View School District 365U Bus Driver Gloria Gonzalez has worked for the district for almost 28 years.

As a 28-year veteran bus driver for Valley View School District 365U, Gloria Gonzalez knows she has a lot of responsibility.  "There's nothing as important as the life of a child," Gonzalez said. "The safety of the students supersede everything that we do. They're number one, always." Never was it so apparent, she said, after a snowstorm when "the streets were like Teflon" and it was "really, really slippery." While scanning all of her mirrors, Gonzalez saw a mother bless the bus.  "When I see the parents waiting there -- especially the kindergarten and first-graders -- and I see the look in their eyes, they're trusting us," she said. "They're trusting us to give their kids a safe ride to and from school. That's a huge obligation." …

I work at one of the Valley View Elementary Schools helping students board the proper bus safely at the end of the day. I see some of what these drivers have to put up with and hear even more. 49 VVSD Students Named AP Scholars

Twenty students from Bolingbrook High School were named AP scholars, according to the district.

Editor's note: This press release was provided by Valley View School District 365U.  Forty-nine current and former Valley View School District 365U high school students have been named 2012 AP Scholars by the College Board. To be an AP Scholar, a student must receive a 3 or higher (out of a possible 5) on three or more Advanced Placement exams. An AP Scholar with Honor must average 3.25 on all exams taken and must receive a 3 or higher on four or more exams. And an AP Scholar with Distinction must average 3.5 on all exams taken and receive a 3 or higher on five or more exams. Advanced Placement exams are given in 10 academic areas. VVSD Students Earn College Credit through Lewis Program

Sixteen students participated in a free foreign language program during the summer for college credit.

Retired Marine Tapped to Be New ROTC Commander for Romeoville High School

Major (Ret.) Mark Placey's goal is to "help young folks to become leaders," he said.

But now, Romeoville High School’s new Marine Junior ROTC Unit Commander says, “it’s time to take my knowledge and help young folks become leaders.” Placey is both an educator and a pilot, a unique combination for RHS’ elite ROTC unit that is recognized as one of the top ROTC units in the Chicago area. A graduate of Millikin University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in physical education and a minor in math, Placey admits he wanted “to keep challenging myself physically” when he graduated from college. RHS Senior Receives Marine Legion of Valor Award

Daniel Quan has received an award given to only six of 35,000 Marine Corps Junior ROTC cadets in the country.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  Romeoville High School Senior Daniel Quan has been awarded the prestigious Marine Corps Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement, an honor accorded to only six of the 35,000 Marine Corps Junior ROTC cadets throughout the country. Quan, who was promoted to the rank of Cadet Colonel at the end of last school year, will serve as the RHS Marine Corps JROTC Battalion Commander during the coming school year. “He’s a very impressive young man,” said Maj. Flories to be VVSD’s 6-12 Director of Literacy, Social Studies

Karen Flories was previously the English Department Chair for Romeoville High School.

Editor's note: The following is a press release from Valley View School District 365U.  Romeoville High School’s English Department Chair Karen Flories has been named Valley View School District 365U’s Director of Literacy and Social Studies for grades 6-12. Flories, who joined the RHS faculty for the 2007-08 school year as a behavior disorder teacher, has been teaching English at RHS for four years. She was named Department Chair last year. One of the sponsors for Romeoville High School’s highly successful Freshman Advisory program, she holds a Bachelor’s Degree in secondary English from Governors State University and a Master’s in Educational Administration from Concordia University. She will assume her duties immediately.

RHS Grad Leads Country in Scoring at Morton

Romeoville High School graduate Demarius Miller will play for Morton College in Cicero for a second year.

Miller, a 6-2 guard who averaged 27.6 points per game as a redshirt freshman to lead the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II in scoring, signed the NJCAA’s Second-Year Agreement to return for a second season at Morton College.
