The Woodridge School District 68 board will hold a hearing Feb. 4 to discuss holding classes on various holidays, such as Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and Veterans Day.
Should students and teachers be in class on holidays? The Woodridge School District 68 school board will hold a hearing to discuss that option. The Board of Education will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, 7200 Janes Ave. in Woodridge. District 68 officials are requesting a modification of 105 ILCS 5/24-2, which states that teachers shall not be required to work on legal school holidays. The board proposes a waiver application for an "all-purpose holiday." That could mean regular class schedules and attendance, but also include parent-teacher conferences, school improvement session, teacher in-service days or teacher institutes, according to the District 68 website. Valley View School District 365U Board members said the vote would not affect the 2012-2013 school calendar.
The Valley View School District 365U Board of Education approved a waiver of three school holidays Monday night. The three holidays are Abraham Lincoln's Birthday (Feb. 12), Casimir Pulaski Day (first Monday in March) and Christopher Columbus Day (second Monday in October). The board needed to waive Abraham Lincoln's Birthday as a school holiday since Feb. 12, a Tuesday, is scheduled as a school day on the 2012-2013 school calendar. The district decided to waive the other two holidays to have flexibility in the future to use those days for potential student or teacher use. Valley View School District 365U will hold a public hearing Monday to hear testimony about using three traditional school holidays for school attendance, teacher institute days, parent/teacher conference days or staff development activities. The holidays in question are Abraham Lincoln's Birthday (Feb. 12), Casimir Pulaski Day (first Monday in March) and Christopher Columbus Day (second Monday in October). Administration, educators, parents, and members of the public will have a chance to speak out on this proposal. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the board room at the Administrative Center at 755 Dalhart Drive in Romeoville. What do you think?
