Letter to the Editor: Shame on Bob Kalnicky

Find candidate questionnaires and the latest election news in our November election guide. Editor's note: Bob Kalnicky is running against Natalie Manley for the 98th district state representative seat.   I don't usually talk openly about politics. I believe that one of our great privileges as American citizens is our right to vote. How we vote is based on what we believe to be in the best interest of our district etc. As a woman I take my right to vote seriously. I am appalled to find a piece of mail today from Bob Kalnicky. If I were ever considering to vote for him, my mind would have been changed after seeing the FALSE accusations towards his opponent. Had Mr. Kalnicky's camp done their homework, they would have found the accusations …

Practice What You Preach: Woman Makes a Difference in Family Life

After losing bid to become a state lawmaker, Maripat Oliver returns to advocacy for foster care.

Every child deserves to be nurtured by a caring family. And absolute devotion to that belief is the driving force behind Maripat Oliver's quest to help improve Illinois’ child welfare system. Oliver, an appointee to both the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services review board and post-adoption advisory board, draws upon personal experience in the foster care system to advocate for the needs of all involved in the process—kids, foster and adoptive parents as well as birth parents. Oliver said most foster parents are trying to do their best on a tight budget. She said it makes her mad when she hears people say foster parents are in it for the money. "When you look at how little they receive, that argument doesn’t make sense," …
