J.R. Tibbott Elementary School students departed on the ultimate international field trip — no passports needed — with the arrival of one of the world’s largest maps of Europe on April 22. The National Geographic Traveling Map of Europe, measuring 26 feet by 26 feet, enabled students to embark on a mock tour of the world’s second smallest continent, while learning about its rich history and diverse geography. Designed for grades K-8, the map will be on loan to Tibbott through April 27. Tibbott Elementary School teachers participated this week in the school's talent show.
Teachers at Tibbott Elementary School showed some real school spirit this week as students geared up for the school's talent show. In what's become an annual tradition, teachers danced to Peanut Butter Jelly Time much to the entertainment of hundreds of students. The performance was a warm up for Tuesday night's full show, according to the Valley View School District website. Tibbott Elementary School fifth-graders are showing their fellow students how to compost.
Tibbott Elementary School will be ready to hit the ground running when it comes time to plant the new edible school garden that was built last fall. Students in David Mertes’ fifth grade class have been busy helping every classroom in the school plant seedlings in milk cartons recycled from the Tibbott cafeteria using compost created through a “vermiposting” project. “Eventually,” said Tibbott Principal Ana Wilson, “our hope is to have a compost bin outside near the garden.” But for now, a 6-foot-by-3-foot rubber bin sitting in Mr. Mertes’ room filled with thousands of worms will have to do. Mr. Mertes’ Student Ambassadors, as they are called, are not only showing fellow students how to use the compost to grow such things as radishes, …

The Illinois Chapter of the United States Green Building Council has honored Tibbott Elementary School for the outstanding community collaboration that took place during the planning and construction of the school’s outdoor garden project. Tibbott staff and Wight & Company of Darien volunteers worked together on the project which culminated in the actual construction of the garden by dozens of volunteers on Green Apple Day of Service which was Sept. 29. Plantings will begin in the spring. The USGBC was so impressed with the combined efforts that officials gave Tibbott its “Best Partner Collaboration Award” of outstanding accomplishment. Tibbott Elementary School students will anxiously watch the results of the Presidential election after casting their own ballots last week in the school library. In recent weeks, Tibbott students in grades 2-5 not only learning about presidential elections through a BrainPop video, but also registering to vote. Last week, they filed in their ballots while standing one-at-a-time in a mini voting both in the library, voting for either President Obama or Governor Romney. After they’ve marked their ballots, students place the ballots in a red, white and blue ballot box where they will remain until polls close. Every student who votes receives an “I voted” book mark. Tibbott Elementary School in Bolingbrook held a pep rally Wednesday as part of its 2012 college week.
More than 600 Tibbott Elementary School students, teachers and staff cheered Wednesday in the school's annual College Week pep rally. "We are JRT! JRT is college bound!" they shouted. For the past three years, the school has held college-related events for its students. On Thursday, parents will be invited to a lemonade tailgate party, where the school will offer mock dorm room visits, a guest speaker for parents, a financial planning booth and football and cheerleading activities for the students. With last weekend’s “Garden Build Day” behind them, Tibbott Elementary School families, staff and students are eagerly anticipating the Sept. 29 Green Apple Day of Service dedication of their new 2,800 square foot outdoor classroom area that includes a variety of edible gardens. “We’re so excited to be able to do this for our kids,” said Principal Ana Wilson.
