Valley View Students Excel at Will County Spelling Bee
Students competed Thursday night at Lewis University in Romeoville.

Valley View School District 365U once again proved its students are among the best spellers in Will County by placing four 8th grade spellers in the top 13 at the annual Will County Spelling Bee Thursday night. Defending County champion Kim Belser of Humphrey Middle School, who competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. last year, finished fourth at this year’s county bee, missing on the word “striated” in the 17th round. Lukancic’s Elizabeth Zahorick tied for 5th place, dropping out in the 15th round on the word “nonplus.” Rory Richards of A. Vito Martinez tied for 8th place, missing “junta” in round nine. Defending Will County Spelling Champ Wins Valley View District Spelling Bee, Again
Humphrey Middle School eighth-grader Kim Belser won the Valley View School District 365U Spelling Bee Tuesday.
Humphrey Middle School eighth-grader Kim Belser, who represented Will County at the Scripps-Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. last year, will get another shot at being Will County champion this year after winning Tuesday night’s Valley View School District 365U Spelling Bee. Defending Will County Champ Qualifies for Valley View District Spelling Bee
Kim Belser, who traveled to Washington, DC, for the Scripps National Spelling Bee last year, has qualified to again compete in the Valley View School District 365U spelling bee.
In what can only be called a battle of epoch proportions, two Humphrey Middle School 8th graders went 93 rounds over two days of competition to determine who will represent the school in the Valley View School District 365U Spelling Bee Feb. 5. Christy and Kim are not strangers to each other. As sixth-graders, Christy edged Kim to move on to district. Last year, as seventh-graders, Kim beat Christy, and not only went on to win the VVSD crown but also won the Will County title and went to Washington, DC, to compete in the national spelling bee.
