As of Sunday, shoppers paying with a credit card may be charged a new 4 percent added "checkout fee." The fee is legal in 40 states. Illinois is among them. The fee is the result of a settlement between announced last summer between credit card companies and major banks to "fix credit card processing fees with merchants." Retailers can now charge credit card users 1.5 percent to 4 percent of their total bill to cover processing costs to credit card companies. I read somewhere else that consumers are supposed to be informed about this prior to the purchase. The article said that there would be a conspicuous sign posted at stores, meaning obviously in full sight and not hidden. Not sure about internet orders, assuming they would have some sort of verbage on their site. I would think they'd have to because a lot of people might come back wanting to …   more ›
